AT&T Fiber host, BGW320-505 modem/router, connected wirelessly to my home built Win11 PC.
I was briefly able to remote stream to my phone which was NOT on the wifi network. It lasted maybe 30 minutes and then crapped out.
Automatic setup did not work, of course.
I got into my router management page and set the PC to 192.168.1.94. Then in Firewall—> NAT/Gaming, I have created Plex on port TCP/UDP 32400 (range of 32400 to 32400), and added it to that PC’s device ID.
In Plex Server I have it set to manually forward, it shows the same IP address as the desktop and a port number of 32400.
But I can’t connect my phone to the server anymore, whereas it did for about 30 minutes after I first set everything, on these exact settings.
I hate that I bought a lifetime membership to be able to remotely access my media, but I apparently have to be a CCIE level networking engineer to set it up.
In Settings → Remote Access, you must check the box to manually specify the public port, even if using the default 32400. That tells Plex to use the manual port instead of UPnP.
Additional Items
In Windows, make sure the network is configured as private, not public. Win10: Settings → Network & Internet → Status → Properties (Win 11 should be similar). This is needed for local, not remote, access, but you should check it anyway.
Does Plex Settings → Remote Access say “Fully accessible…” or “Not accessible…”? Note that you need to wait 1 - 2 minutes after enabling remote access. Initially, Plex always says “Fully available…” which can be misleading. If setup fails, which may take a minute or two, it changes to “Not available…”
Also, from your server or another system on the same network, go to canyouseeme.org. Enter your remote access port number. If port forwarding is working correctly then it should be able to see your server.
There are many cases where using Wifi is a good idea, especially where wired is not an option
I bet that a large percentage of Plex users (I don’t know this, but how many people have wired networks at home) use Plex over Wifi every single day without issues.
I am specifically referring to connecting your PMS server machine via wifi. Client are not a problem but servers need better connections that wifi just doesn’t offer. It might work for while, until it doesnt.
