I’ve actually reported this before but the issue was ignored and auto-closed (I hate how your forum software does that).
Anyway this has been happening for a long time but me (and a few other Plex users) only noticed when we couldn’t Direct Play our audio anymore (in this case Samsung decided to stop supporting DTS decoding).
The test case seems to be this: Direct Streamable video + Unplayable audio + Subtitles (this is basically 80% of my media). The crash will happen randomly (meaning it could be 1 hour into the movie) but AFAICT predictably. I have a movie where it happens exactly at the 1 minute mark (which coincidentally is also my Transcoder default throttle buffer). I’ve split this movie a few times until I had a 30 second clip which I’d be able to post here:
To reproduce: Just play it on a recent TV without DTS support (I can only test Samsung but probably also LG). Do not transcode the video (as that “fixes” it) and enable subtitles.
Like I said it’s kinda random (or I just don’t know the rules yet): With this particular file my PS5 plays it fine but will definitely struggle with other DTS/TrueHD movies but IIRC it’s constant stutter rather than complete freeze.
This bug makes Plex borderline unusable for me because it means I can no longer watch movies on my TV. Everytime I wanna watch something I have to SSH into my server, run ffmpeg -c:v copy -c:a ac3 and wait 10 minutes. This is far from the plug-and-play that Plex strives for. I decided to finally bring it up again after seeing all the recent work the devs have been doing so hopefully this time, I won’t be ignored.
