Transcoding with GeForce GTX 550ti?

Just wondering if the GPU on a GeForce GTX 550ti will work ok for transcoding? I’m running a server for just me at home and a couple remote users. No live TV. Just looking to give the CPU a break if I can. Any thoughts?

550 appears to be too old to support gpu assist.

you need a newer gpu (find something on craigs list or ebay if you can’t afford a new one)

this chart will tell you what codecs are supported per card.

You’ll want a 1050 or better to transcode both AVC/H264 & HEVC/H265 video.

Do not get a 1030. As shown in the chart TeknoJunky linked, it does not support NVENC.

Also, a reminder that NVIDIA GTX GPUs are limited to two simultaneous transcodes. The third simultaneous transcode will hit your CPU.

also the newer GPUs also have increased quality, not just wider support. Patched drivers can get you past a software limit of 2 simultaneous transcodes , or you can get a Quadro that does not have this artificial limit. The GTX 1660
is the lowest cost card if you want the latest GPU/best quality picture. The 1650 doesnt seem to have the current encoder/decoder chip, so that option is out.

I have a gtx 1650, quality is fine. Equal or better than the epic p2000.
besides, what quality matters for transcoding that is not even saved.

Only if you were using the card to SAVE the actual trancode, would the quality matter.

much todo about nothing, and the 1650 comes in smaller size and doesn’t require external power connection.

Thats a good point, many are perfectly fine. I used to use an old haswell intel igpu, and it was fine too. and the GTX1650 is the cheapest current model with the bonus of not needing additional power (for some models)
Still my comment was true, the newest decoder/encoder series is the best quality for an add on card, and the cheapest model that uses it so far is the GTX 1660 as far as I have been able to find.

I frankly completely disagree with your point that quality doesnt matter if you don’t save it, It matters each and everytime it is viewed in my opinion.

If the quality matters then you should be direct playing, eh?

@mervincm no doubt this thread @ https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/bgvjml/gtx_1650_does_not_have_turings_nvenc_it_has_voltas/ or one like it is influencing many people away from the 1650.

It is only the nvenc that is not the newest, but still newer than the pascal 10x0 and p2000 series cards.

I am hear to tell anyone, for less than 150 bux its a great card for plex, not perfect no. But cheap and usable, especially for some server that isn’t going to be used for gaming or other 3d needs.

The only thing the 1660 will get you is extra vram (6g vs 4g), which for linux may be important for some.
