Trying to set up 2 Apple TV units to connect to a single Plex server on NAS

I have a Plex Media Server installed on a WD PR4100 NAS; with one exception, my network is PC-based, although we also run Apple devices like phones, iPads, and of course Apple TV. I set up one Apple TV to run with it and access media on the NAS, and apart from some issues with title organization (one TV show insisted on creating a new season for a single episode from the only season!), it worked seamlessly. However, when I set up a second Apple TV to run from another TV in another part of the house, and access the same server, I get "server unauthorized" notes and cannot access the library.

My research in the forums indicates that what I need to do is copy the certificate file from the first Apple TV to the second, and that should take care of the authorization issue. However, I cannot locate the *.cer files on the NAS to copy! The instructions I’ve found to create a new certificate are also pretty cryptic, and also presume that I’m able to write over the existing *.cer file(s) (which I can’t do since I cannot locate them). While I have a "higher than the average bear" level of computer competence, many of the solutions I’ve read, for all sorts of conditions, are pretty down in the technical weeds and I don’t want to spend the next 6 months gaining the base line knowledge I need to understand them, just to be able to access things via Plex.

If the solution to running a second Apple TV on the same server is in fact to copy the certificate, can someone help me find where the existing *.cer file(s) are located, and/or a description of the steps I need to take to perform this process? If there is another solution to this problem, apart from the certificate copying, I’m all ears!

Many thanks for assistance on this one.

uh generally you should not have to do anything with certs.

you should be able to easily have multiple clients with a single server (although depending on the server power, transcoding may be limited).

what you might need to do is go into the client settings and make sure secure connections are disabled (or preferred), not required.

also on the server web admin, you should also ensure that secure connections are not required.

if the apple tv client does not automatically see your local plex server, then you can go into the client options and set a manual connection to the ip of the plex server.

you also need to make sure all your devices are using the same private network subnet (ie like 192.168.1.x). having different subnets will cause problems.

I think the certificate thing was for the Apple TV 3 that had a hack to allow the trailers app to be used as a Plex client. There was no tvOS App Store then.

Thanks for the suggestions. My NAS is at x.x.x.40, and my ATV is at x.x.x.166, so I’ve got them on the same subnet. My ATV DNS is now pointing to the IP of the NAS, and the Plex server security preference is set to “Preferred.”

What I can’t figure out is how to change the client security settings. The Plex app isn’t providing any provision like that, nor is the ATV. How do I get to the security preferences to change them?

You are right I checked my old Atv it doesn’t appear to have the option regarding secure connection.
