For years having Plex show up as a cast device twice in Plex has driven me nuts with our home theatre setup and then a Chromecast in each room + a chromecast audio. Plex cast works far less reliably for Plex than Chromecast and it doesnt work for any other services. It’s super annoying and redundant and subpar. Just let Google handle casting, we get it.
I’m about to buy another Shield TV for the master bedroom and if I get two more cast devices that i can’t disable, it will drive me insane. Plex casting is spotty at best and it sucks at worst. Please, please, PLEASE let us disable it either at the server or Shield client level. Everyone has Chromecast, get over it.
It doesn’t exist on the Shield client and hasn’t for 3 years for sure. Our Shield and NAS are always on along with Chromecasts so turning off the Shield to not have Plex show up or making sure Plex isnt running on it isnt an option. We have a plex playlist that runs all night to distract one of our anxious dogs. We’re looking at getting another Shield as Chromecasts dont work without internet and have some minor playback incompatibility but the cast list which is a feature used dozens of times per day is already out of hand.
I definitely agree that this option needs to be available.
It’s confusing for those that don’t understand built in Chromecast vs app casting (we’re on an Android TV) and as you mentioned I definitely encourage the built in Chromecast to be used as the app doesn’t work as well.
It’s also confusing because sometimes the Plex app is open in the background and available for casting and sometimes it’s not.
I’d really like to be able to see the ability to disable the app as a casting option.
I’m really surprised so many features keep getting reiterated while the base functionality is just interpreted and forced on the paying userbase seemingly at whim.
You can skip intros now but you cant turn off the countdown timer between episodes, you supposedly own and can set your own bandwidth profiles on your media server but cannot disable or change the 2h inactivity timer.
Plex cast only works with Plex but every device that supports Plex cast as a media device has a better version called Chromecast that works with other apps… Plex is also spotty at best as a cast reciver just with Plex. It never gets used, cannot turn it off and it takes up an extra 2 spots on my already congested cast list. It would be way more if i didnt go in and turn it off on EVERY browser and phone with Plex in my house… ugh. It should be a toggle option on every platform that is off by default…
