TV episodes do not show thumbnails when skipping unless launched with Play button

If I play an episode of a TV series by clicking OK with the episode image highlighted (where I can cursor left/right to choose an episode from the season), then when I skip forward/back during playback, the thumbnails do not show. If I instead click OK with the play button highlighted (i.e., move the cursor down from the selected episode to the Play button, then click OK), then I get thumbnails when skipping during playback.
