TV Posters gone after restoring backup.

My TV shows were fine but my movies db got corrupted somehow and I had to restore from backup. Now the movies are fine but the poster images are gone from my tv shows. I was so impressed with Plex for automatically finding the images for different seasons. Why can’t it do that again? I read somewhere to delete the cache file but which one? There are so many. Thanks for helping.

I’ll take a stab at it:
Your naming and structuring is out of whack and you employed ‘Fix Match’ for much of it or much of your stuff was placed earlier than mid-2016 (back when Plex had access to that magical Google API that kicked in when horrible names/structures were encountered).

If that doesn’t sound familiar let’s have a look at a full set of log files. Could be all sorts of handy info in those things:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files
Drag zip file to a message window and drop it.

If the above does sound familiar, now would probably be an excellent time to start bringing your TV Shows into compliance:

FileBot (link in my signature) will wrangle that Wild Bull to the ground and make it purr like a kitten in no time.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll send a log when I get home from work. I have dozen of movies and there’s no problem there. I have three tv show folders. Two are fine and display the poster art. The newest one that I’ve added this week has two seasons and contains all episodes. Plex installed the correct artwork for each season which impressed me, but after restoring the backup db, it applied the same general picture to each season, not the corresponding artwork it had before. I hope the log tells us how to fix this.

Wow, I downloaded the plex media server log which was in zip format and when I unzipped I got dozens of files. I dragged the zip file as you suggested but there are dozens of files in there. I don’t know which one you need to see.

It’s possible that when your database got corrupted, it removed the downloaded posters. So restoring a backup database would not bring back the posters. Try refreshing your library.

There’s only one log file I need to look at - and it wouldn’t do much good for me to look at any others, but if necessary I know which Ghostbusters to call. I don’t think that’s going to be necessary though.

I:\TV Shows\ <---- possible valid TV Show Library - ok, we’ll go with that.
…Gilmore Girls Season 2\ <---- invalid TV Show Folder - no Season Folder
…GILMORE GIRLS S02E01.mp4 <---- possible valid file name, but you don’t have to shout at Plex - it’s hearing is fine.

Example of a valid TV Show structure:

I:\TV Shows
…Gilmore Girls
…Season 2
…Gilmore Girls - S02E01.mp4 <---- call me picky - many do. My TV Shows and Movies work though.

FileBot (link in my signature) can handle that naming and structuring for you automatically or manually in seconds.

What FileBot can’t do is remove possible embedded metadata in the Title Field of MP4/M4V files. Plex will read this info and prefer it over a perfect file name/structure (you don’t have any of those yet), but you can combat that situation by moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of every agent list you can find. All tabs in TV Show and Movies here:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents
Just drag LMA to the bottom of the lists (all of them) and drop it. If you do have embedded metadata this will cure the issue, if you don’t it won’t matter. LMA will do what it has to from the bottom.

Renaming/restructuring is best performed OUTSIDE the library and you’ll need to write a new bundle for the shows so The Plex Dance® was invented:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove show from library - yep, the whole thing
  2. update library
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— update library, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. bring names and structures into compliance
  6. replace corrected show into library
  7. update library

All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.

Do the above and you’ll be well on your way to happiness in the Plexiverse.

I don’t have windows 10 so I guess Filebot is out for me. I’ll do The Plex Dance and cross my fingers.

Thank you! :smile

I followed all instructions to the letter…did the Plex Dance and ended up with the same result. No art, no titles so I created my own images and keyed in the episode titles on the three seasons. Then I added three seasons of Veronica Mars and lo and behold…images, blurbs, and episode titles all appeared like magic. So I scratched my head and tried to determine what was different and the answer was nothing. So I did the Plex Dance again removing Gilmore from the library etc. and when I replaced it, same thing…no images no descriptions, no episode titles. It’s downright mystifying. I have four more seasons to add and it sure would be nice if Plex helped me out so I don’t need to input everything manually.

Just looked at your log. Your folder structure is wrong.

I:\TV Shows\Gilmore Girls Season 2\GILMORE GIRLS S02E01.mp4

Your library points to I:\TV Shows. The next folder needs to be the name of the show.

I:\TV Shows\Gilmore Girls

You can then have season folders. Or you can skip that and put the files directly there, but you cannot have season folders at this level.

Yea, said that already:

I thought those instructions were fairly clear, but perhaps not.

You don’t need Win 10 to use FileBot.

I renamed all my files. TV Shows/Gilmore Girls/Season 1/ and then the episode list as directed. My Veronica Mars files are listed the same way and Plex worked great with them. Will my updated logs shed any light?

Always - don’t leave home without 'em.

Successs…I had to reboot the the PC and when I did, I updated the library and OMG, the Gilmore Girls updated…not with artwork but the episode titles and blurbs were there. So except for the images, it’s perfect and I’m satisfied.
Thank you so much for the encouragement and support.
