TV Program Episode

I have a Nvidia which works really well but there seems to be an issue with TV program episodes. I start watching an episode and then watch a few more. The next night I go to watch the next one and it seems to remember the last episode as one much earlier than the last one I watched. As an example I’m watching a series where the current episode is s01e05 and it returns to that even after several nights of watching more episodes. This is really irritating, I’m now on S02E04 and I just went out and when I returned I restarted the unit after it sleep, ie a soft start and when I went to play that episode it again went back to S01E05.

Any idea what’s going on?

Are you playing from On Deck?

Well the series is on deck, I’m not sure what that means though. Above the on deck strip is the continue watching strip, I simply select the series from continue watching.

some background…

  • on deck refers to “the next thing” to play – it’s mostly used when you watch a tv show; after completing an episode, the next episode will show in on deck
  • continue watching will only be displayed if you have videos you haven’t yet completed watching. It could happen that a show is not marked as watched if you stop playback e.g. during a very long credits sequence

If you start the video via continue watching, you’ll just re-start that episode you had already been watching.

Careful if you’re using the same function within the Android TV home screen. Plex might add some boxes there, but those might get stuck, offering you old episodes too.

I’m not sure that’s how it’s really working. I wanted to give it a good try before responding hence the delay. I found that both on deck and continue watching had the same episode up, both also asked if I want to continue from 09:45 or start from beginning. I tried just finishing an episode and then going to the home screen and then going to watch the next episode, I also did the same thing but with a full shutdown. I also made sure I watched through all the credits, although they weren’t long.

It seems in each case it’s stuck in another episode well before the last one watched. It has however moved to a new one to get stuck on.

Plex really needs a check box to indicate that it’s been watched that can also be set from the menu, Kodi works a bit better in this regard.

I also found that if you stop playback or pause and go away and it goes into hibrinate mode, on restart or resume you also go back to that stuck episode, it doesn’t even remember where you paused.

Except for the shutdown that’s basically in line with what I had described (if an episode remains not watched completely, it’ll remain on as the next thing to complete watching in both on deck and continue watching).

Videos that haven’t been completed will show in your library with an orange progress bar below the poster, indicating how much of it has been watched. Currently if you complete watching approx. 90% of a video, it’s considered watched.

As for…

That already exists in all Plex Clients. You can set an episode to watched in Plex Web by clicking on on the video’s pre-play screen.
In Plex Web that also works for multiple episodes / movies:

In Plex for Android which should be running when you play movies directly on your TV from the Nvidia Shield, you have the same option in the video’s pre-play screen… only there it’s written out (mark as watched/unwatched). This button should be right next to the Play button, above the episode description.

So just to make sure I’ve got this right, even if I watch the next episode, that doesn’t reset the play next reference point, unless I go back to the episode that isn’t completely watched, according to Plex, I will always have that episode as the resume place.

That’s just silly, why wouldn’t the next episode you watch in the series move the resume point along?

I am curious why you don’t just set it as watched/played? Are you planning on going back to that episode?

I sit down and watch a few at a time, they just play on automatically. Why would I need to set anything, Plex knows I’ve watched it, Plex should mark it as watched.

Are you suggesting that I should go back and set the stuck one as watched? I will try that but I’m still curious why Plex doesn’t do this, why it doesn’t move the marker along. The real issue for me is that I forget which episode I’m on because they advance automatically. When I turn off for the night I now check to see which episode I’m up to but if I forget I need to go back through the epsiodes to try and find my place. Surely Plex should do this? Also I sometimes leave a week without watching that show.

I worked for Oracle for many years and developers called things like this undocumented features, our clients called them bugs, LOL

I just tried the played feature. The episode was already marked as played, I set it to Not played and then set it back to played, it made no difference. I’m currently stuck in s04e01. It still thinks I’m at 9 mins into the episode.

I started watching another series the other day and last night I continued on at episode S05E02, I watched the next one S05E03, I then shut down for the night. I just went to watch the next one but instead S03E02 was showing. This is a bug. Gone back to Kodi for TV series.
