TV series grouping issue

Server Version#: Version 1.43.0.10492

I have a number of TV series on my Plex server. All are perfectly fine, except 2. These 2 shows have continuation/spinoffs, which is where the problem comes in. Just as an example Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance, both files in the library, but it shows only as Die Hard. If you click edit and click info you see :\…\Die Hard.mkv and \…..\Die Hard with a Vengeance, but if you go back to the library you only see Die Hard. This is the case with the entire 2 series. The series only shows as 1 series in the library. I click that and it shows Episode 1, I click edit and info and it shows 4 different files. It I click the three dots it has Play version, which each version plays one of the four files respectively. I have changed all settings under library→ advance→collections. I have refreshed the metadata, I have removed the files and re-added them. I have searched google for any other solutions, nothing. Most of the info deals with prior versions, which the options have been changed.

First thing I would do is rename those files to “Die Hard (1988).mkv” and “Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995).mkv”, then do a Plex Dance.

You cannot mix movies and TV shows in the same library. They must be in separate directory structures and separate libraries.

Which two series?

How are the files currently named and organized? Please provide a directory listing, screenshot, etc. that shows the full path to the files, including the folder added to the Plex library and the file extension (mp4/mkv/etc.).

Follow Plex naming and organization requirements for TV shows. You may need to Plex Dance the shows afterwards.

As @napolij states, name them correctly then perform the Plex Dance.

Example:

/movies
   /Die Hard (1988)
      /Die Hard (1988).mkv
   /Die Hard 2 (1990)
      /Die Hard 2 (1990).mkv
   /Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
      /Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995).mkv

Die Hard and Die hard with a Vengence are movies, not TV shows, so probably need a better example.

Based on the description of issue it sounds like the issue is either related to the parent folder they are in and/or what folder is added to the library set up settings causing them to merge when they should not be.

OK, to clarify, the Die Hard was just an example I used as it’s widely known. The 2 series are tv shows. They both contain the original name, but the spinoff has a secondary title. I have 100’s of tv shows is many, many series. I have the naming structure set specific to the series. I have tried the rename, same results. I used Emby as well, and that has no problem with the series. It seems as though Plex is “collection” these 2 series instead of picking up as series.

Better example Daredevil and Daredevil Born Again, it would be like having them both, but it only shows as Daredevil. Then you click episode 1, click the 3 dots and it says play version. It seems both shows, but “sees” them as different versions of the same show.

If you have all the CSI shows for example they should not be in a CSI subfolder. That would cause the issue it sounds like you are describing

Wrong

/TV shows
   /CSI
       /CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
       /CSI Miami
       /CSI Vegas
       /CSI NY

correct

/TV shows
   /CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
   /CSI Miami
   /CSI Vegas
   /CSI NY

If you provide a real example of a show/spinoffs you are actually having issue with and their folder structure we will be able to help you better.

That is exactly how they are.

Thanks, I figured it out, apparently when I saved the setting the server glitched and was “stuck” between settings. I reset and changed them and it’s working.
