I created a new tv shows library (in czech language) on the PLEX server 1.1.0.2611 . I use “TheTVDB” agent. My tv shows (folders and files) are correctly named (in english language). If the original name of the TV series is same in czech and english language, such as “Star Trek”, metadata are downloaded in the czech language (it’s okay). If the original name is different in czech and english language, such as “Friends” in english vs. “Přátelé” in czech language, metadata are downloaded in the english language. Previously I used KODI, where all metadata has been downloaded properly in czech language.
Potential bug?
@“mira.laurin” - It probably means TVDB doesn’t have a direct match. I believe it defaults to English if TVDB doesn’t report a language match between what Plex is sending and what it has. I also believe from another thread, TVBD may have a bug in their system that they are addressing.
And the followup a couple of posts down:
If you search on TheTVDB for ‘Friends’, but select ‘czech’ as language, you will get no hits.
Thus, your files and folders for this tv show need to be named with the czech title of the show, not the english one.
Is your Plex server running Windows or …?
Do you have the language set to czech in the properties of your tv show library?

It works in KODI. I guess, that TVDB API returns SHOW ID and PLEX should ask if they are metadata available for the SHOW ID in the selected language (SHOW ID is the same regardless of translation/language in TVDB).
In Plex this probably does not work.

I use English names especially for better identification. Again, in KODI without problems.

Mac OS X El Capitan

Yes

Hi!
Probably there is no metadata in czech language on TVDB site. I had a similar problem with TV Serie “continnum” There is no description in Portuguese and for this reason i have a blank page as result. Also for episodes i am only able to download info in english. This is TVDB problem as far as i understand.
Bye,
Braz.
This is not a problem with TVDB. Metadata in Czech are available on TVDB database. In KODI which also uses TVDB, metadata are downloaded and displayed fine in Czech.

Try this lateste build 1.1.3.2700 my problem with TVDB has gone ![]()
Unfortunately, the problem is not solved.
Example:
I have English file names and plex scanner has a problem with it (no problem in KODI).
Confirmed, I have to use my local language in the file names when I want localized metadata in Plex.
Sorry, there is only this solution.
Changing file names for a whole series is easy though, if you use software like Filebot
Hi @mira.laurin
I think the problem is because the directory is in English… I really don´t remember any plex build that could sucessfully identify the TV named in English to be “Translated” to any other language. In my opinion this setting is only to “tell” plex download the metadata in the chosen language…But if you named in english it will not translate the title, only the metadata info.
As @OttoKerner said you should change the directory name to the local language if you want everything in Czech language.
I do the same here with Portuguese Brazilian.
Braz.
Renaming tv shows (folder and files) to czech language resolve the problem.
Thank you for the advice.
Hello,
I’m having similar problems with movie titles. I have one file for each movie title (one MP4) but I created three libraries. I have an English, a French and a Spanish library using the same file. The movie files are in my folder called movies. Each library points to the same folder. The movie files have the English title. When I scan my English library everything works. When I scan my French and Spanish libraries all the metadata gets downloaded in it’s respective language except the movie title. The posters, tagline and summary are in the proper language except the movie title. The only way I found to fix the problem is to go into the French and Spanish libraries and manually change the titles to the right language, This is extremely tedious. I have to go on the internet, search the English movie title on Wikipedia to see what the titles are in French and Spanish so I can change it in Plex. The problem is I have over 1200 movies. So I would need to change over 2400 titles. I’ve been using Plex for about 4 years now, what annoys me is that it used to work on older versions of Plex but not anymore.
This problem stared when I changed my Plex server onto a new computer and scanned the libraries. I made a backup of the metadata folder from my old computer. I formatted the drive to install on my new computer but didn’t check to see if the backup was good and I lost everything. So I had to re-scan the three libraries again.
If anyone has a solution for the language issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Verify that your files don’t have the english title as embedded metadata.
Do this:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
Afterwards, ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the affected tv shows (not on the episode but on the whole show level).
Hi OttoKerner,
Thank You for the quick response. Unfortunately this still doesn’t work. The movie titles stay in English.
Please post the Plex XML info of one such affected movie.
I uploaded the XML file. The movie title is 12 Years a Slave

What did you select as Country in the properties of the Plex Movie agent? Canada?
Thanks for the warning. I didn’t know anything about the X-Plex Token.
Yes the country chosen for the Plex Movie agent is Canada.
