NEEDS FIXING: Translations missing in Norwegian and Swedish with the new Plex TV Series agent - only showing English despite translations being available on TVDB and TMDB

(PREVIOUS TOPIC TITLE: Matching Norwegian series ALWAYS terrible - why?)

Hi! When trying to match TV series with Norwegian language it fails 99/100. Why is this? I have done the series entry on theTVDB myself for many of the series so I’m 100% that’s not the problem.

If the series have both English and Norwegian language on TVDB (needed if we want it to work with Sonarr) and it’s been scanned by PMS but not picked up, or I want to Fix Match to Norwegian (Library set to English), it’s like banging my head into the wall. :exploding_head:

Changing to Norwegian is a bust, but for some reason changing to Swedish is rarely a problem?!?

This has been an issue for years, is the problem something that has ever been looked into? Or is the problem on theTVDB?

It makes me so frustrated every time I’ve put time into the metadata on theTVDB for everyone and then it doesn’t work on my own Plex.. :pensive:

Here is an example, I’ve got plenty more:

The Norwegian series “Oljefondet” TVDB-id is #356786

I hit “Fix Match” and it immediately give me the English entry for the show, since English is the library default language. So far so good.

Then I click “Search Options” and choose “Norsk” (Norwegian) in the “Language” menu. Notice how the title is already “Oljefondet” since that is the Norwegian title and what I’ve named the files. Hit “Search”.

Here comes the banging my head into the wall part. No matter what I do, or how I search, it always returns the English entry. Always!! :triumph: :pensive:

But (!) if I choose to search for the Swedish entry (Svenska) instead…

…it works like a charm. Like it should!

This is the entry on theTVDB

Like I said, I’ve got plenty more examples:
Med Monsen på villspor
Monsen, Monsen og Mattis
På tur med Lars Monsen
Canada på tvers med Lars Monsen
Atlantic Crossing
Norsk-ish
Maskineriet
Førstegangstjenesten
Hjem til jul
22. juli
Kongen Befaler
Exit (2019)
113
Karsten og Leif
Team Ingebrigtsen
Puckers
etc etc

I’ve tried creating a separate library set to Norwegian but the exact problem occurs.

Any ideas? Is the problem on Plex’s side or theTVDB’s side?
Is there possibly an issue that Norway have two official (?) languages, “norsk bokmål” and “ny-norsk”?

I know Plex has released Beta-testing for their own “Plex TV Series” agent but since we don’t know when/if they will open it up for translations and user input, integration with theTVDB should work. We are many that put countless hours there. (yeah I know about the new API sh*t..).

Anyone from Plex or any moderators that have any suggestions?

I saw @adriana commenting about the new metadata agent in that thread, maybe you as a Plex employee have any insight?

From what I’ve seen there’s indeed an issue with Plex not picking up metadata for tv-shows in certain languages (Norge/Norwegian among them). Not sure this will be addressed as part of the new scanner/agent and as usual no ETA for a fix – sorry.

That makes me so sad, can’t imagine it would be a difficult thing to solve. So it’s a known issue and it’s just being ignored?

Instead of putting tons of work in developing new features it would be appreciated if the Plex team could fix such a fundamental feature.

I’ve tried using other services and those can fetch the Norwegian metadata, so I guess the problem is Plex’s.

Hi! This has been the case for a while and I see the same as you. While the new agent for movies works fine for norwegian the agent for TV-series never get the correct metadata when norwegian is the preferred lanuage. I suspect it is beacause of the two norwegian language variants (Bokmål, Nynorsk). Thetvdb supports lanuage variants but Plex does not seem to search correctly…
It would be nice if the Plex team at least could investigate or tell if this will be corrected in the next edition of the agent. I guess they are in a a process to do some changes to the series agent to be more in line with the new movie agent.
I posted a thread earlier about the norwegian problem with tv series metadata:

Yeah, I saw this thread but it was closed so couldn’t reply in it. For me this have been a problem for at least 1,5-2 years. I’ve seen people report it so I just figured a fix would come. Guess I was wrong…

Yes, the new movie agent works well. But I haven’t seen if there is a way to input data as a user in that database?

I’ve also always thought that the nynorsk/bokmål variants are the problem but when looking at theTVDB no there is no choice for nynorsk when editing translations? Only: “Norwegian (Norsk bokmål)”, and in Plex there is only “Norsk”. So is this really the problem?

Found this from the old TVDB-forum. It seem like they actually no longer support both variants of Norwegian and have collected all entries as one. So Plex should be able to fetch that?!

As far as I know we do not really know where the info for the new agent comes from. But I guess it is just a proxy between plex and services like IMDB/themoviedb so that not all traffic goes directly. The new agent is very fast compared to the old one.

Regarding the problem with thetvdb and norwegian metadata:
I guess the problem can be related to the same behaviour as described in the link you just posted from the tvdb-forum. The behaviour might have changed for the NB,NN vs NO language codes. We do not really know what plex does internally. Only the plex team can investigate this and it should be easy to do since the examples are there on the tvdb  We just have to keep posting… I don’t want to edit all my series locally AND at thetvdb.

@yiveyplex the new TV agent will be able to properly support all translations present in TMDB and TVDB, we’re still working on integrating TVDB translations but the TMDB ones are in the beta version and can already be tried out. Once we add TVDB translations support in the new agent I’m going to test the Norvegian translations since we do have some special handling around Bokmål and Nynorsk but if you do encounter issues with them tag me and we’ll sort it out.

Hi! Thanks for the update. As long as the new agent for TV-shows has good support for norwegian I will be happy. The new one for movies works very good!

Ok that sounds good. I’ve tried the new agent and it performs well with entry that has been translated.

Where should we as users put our efforts going forward if we want to contribute to creating metadata and translations? Should we continue adding to theTVDB or TMDB? How often will you cache their data, ie how long will it take for changes/additions to be seen in Plex agent?

You can contribute in any of the two places but TMDB is probably easier and in the case of translations TMDB has a wider set of supported locales. Changes should be visible in our system within 48h

@adriana is there any chance that you (Plex) will ever fix the agent for theTVDB to work with Norwegian? The new Plex agent is very fast and nice but there is so many conflicts between entries made on TMDB vs TVDB. And editing/adding on both databases is just way too much of a hassle for people.

There have been so many hundred hours put into building the databases with Norwegian tv shows over the years and its extremely frustrated that it can’t used. For some time now TVDB doesn’t have two different options for Norwegian (nynorsk or bokmål) anymore. Is this looked at or will you just continue to sweep it under the rug?

TVDB translations are not yet supported in the new agent but they will be before the agent goes out of beta, I’ve actually already started working on them. Once those are in you could use the new agent with the TVDB episode order preference.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear enough. Episode ordering is nice but that’s not what I was asking for. I meant fix the old TVDB agent and make it work with Norwegian. Right now it doesn’t work at all, and hasn’t been for years. It always bounces back to English. Will this ever be fixed?

The new agent is very good for English spoken content but there are many problems with content that’s non-english. And it’s not possible to choose TVDB or TMDB under “Fix match” anymore so I need to create a separate library for each language to be able to choose only TVDB as agent for non-english TV series. And this is the problem, Norwegian don’t work… :frowning:

We don’t plan to invest time in fixing old bugs from the old agents, we’re going to continue to focus our efforts on the new agents. If the translations in the new agent are badly picked than that’s something that we’ll need to work on. The idea is that whatever data the new agent picks it should be the best available data so you shouldn’t feel the need to switch between TMDB and TVDB anymore. Could you give the new agent another spin once we support translations from TVDB? The feature is definitely lacking now but I’d like to hear your feedback when it’s complete. It’s coming up soon (within the next couple of weeks) and we’ll announce the change on the TV agent beta forum thread when it’s ready.

@yiveyplex as of yesterday we have support for TVDB translations for show and episode titles and summaries in the new TV agent

Great! I’ll have a look!

@adriana Now I’ve set up a library with Norwegian as library language.

How long will it take for the new PTVS to recognize and use the foreign language (Norwegian) metadata on TVDB?

All of the shows that doesn’t have a Norwegian entry on TMDB but does have one on TVDB isn’t pulling Norwegian metadata, only English, just like before. I can’t force it either (by searching for the tvdb-id).
The series that exist on both TVDB and TMDB, is showing text metadata from TMDB and artworks from both.

PMS Version 1.22.2.4282

EDIT: Same with a library with Swedish as library language.

@adriana Any new on this? I’ve tried updating the metadata in the librarys but still no Norwegian or Swedish data from TVDB?
