TV Shows not appearing

Hi there.

I hope someone can help - I’m having issues finding TV Shows even though it seems to me I’ve followed the naming conventions.

As a few examples, I’ve got:
TV Shows\American Dad!\Season 01\American Dad! - s01e01.mkv
TV Shows\Boardwalk Empire\Season 1\Boardwalk Empire - s01e01.mkv

I picked those as they are slightly different - the second one doesn’t have an ‘0’ in the Season number. But neither of the above are showing up, so I’m thinking whatever it is that’s breaking it is somewhere else.

Also, I’ve noticed the drive I’m using is set to read only – I’m guessing that won’t matter? Movies work, but TV showing up empty.

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers,
Nick.

  • Which folder is your Plex library pointing at in this setup? Should be TV Shows (just trying to confirm you’re not pointing it to the individual tv show folders)
  • Also… and again just to be sure… that’s a TV Show library we’re talking about, isn’t it? You haven’t accidentally created it as another library of type “Movies”? (movie libraries will ignore files following the tv-episode naming scheme and vice versa).

Hi there.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve attached some screenshots of the path I’m taking / name of the folders. Hopefully that will give you a bit more to go on.

Best,
Nick.

Is your Plex Media Server also running on that Mac or is this just the external drive you’re using with the Nvidia Shield?

No, the media server is a Seagate external drive, it was just on the Mac so I could show you the paths and structure.

Movies and Music work fine (although Music hasn’t pulled any artwork through, but that’s a separate issue!).

Cheers,
Nick.

A post was split to a new topic: There was an unexpected error loading this library

Hi Tom.

Were my screenshots helpful in working out what could be going wrong here?

Best,
Nick.

not really…
please try the following steps:

  1. go to Settings > Server > General and confirm that Enable Plex Media Server debug logging is checked but Enable Plex Media Server verbose logging is disabled
  2. scan the tv shows library for updates
  3. wait approx. 1 min
  4. go to Settings > Server > Manage > Troubleshooting and click Download Logs
  5. attach the resulting zip file

Maybe there’s something showing up there.

Great stuff, thanks Tom.

I’ll sort that when I get home tonight – sorry, posted while at work as I didn’t expect such a rapid reply!

Best,
Nick.

Here you go!

Hopefully it’s helpful.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-11-05_19-35-39.zip (1.8 MB)

hmmm… from the logs it seems the Plex Media Server cannot see/access the folder linked to this library.

As for your setup… do I read this correct + some more questions:

  • your Plex Media Server is running on a Nvidia Shield?
  • you have connected the Seagate Backup Plus drive as external storage to the Nvidia Shield via USB?
  • when you add the Seagate to Plex… do you mount it as “Internal” or “Removable Storage”?
  • when you edit the library and click Add Folder — are you able to actually navigate to the drive or is it missing?

Not exactly sure if this might be a permission issue… let’s get there step by step.

Hi Tom.

In answer to your questions:

  • yes, I’m running it on an Nvidia Shield
  • I am connecting it via USB so I assume that counts as external storage
  • where can I see how I mount it? I’ve just been plugging it in to my Mac / Nvidia Shield and the film and music libraries appear. Is there a way I can check how I’m mounting it?
  • I’m able to navigate to what I assume is the drive – it has the same path as the film and music libraries so I think that’s the right one. I’ve attached some screenshots of the Add Folder tabs for each library.

Hi Tom.

I’m at home today if there are any further bits of info you’d need to diagnose this.

Best,
Nick

Sorry… busy times at work… I must have missed your previous response.

This is a little tricky indeed.
When you edit the TV Shows library (... > Manage Library > Edit), go to Add folders and click on Browse for media folder… Can you see the subfolders of /storage/D0F6A7ADF6A79270/TV Shows?

This should show the same subfolder structure you showed from your Mac.

(I’d like to rule out there’s a permission issue – even if you could see things alright on the Mac, the Plex Media Server might not have the same permissions… however that’s more of a theoretical thing; nonetheless… let’s better be safe than sorry  )

1 follow-up question: how did you format the external drive (e.g. NTFS, FAT/FAT32/ExFAT, HFS/“Mac OS Extended”, Apple’s new APFS, EXT3)?

Hi there.

No need to apologies, appreciate all your help.

To answer your second question first, I have no idea how I’d have formatted the drive, do you know of a quick way for me to tell? Although again, movies and music show up fine - would an error here not cause issues for all folders?

To your first question, no, but I have to manually add that path based on how movies and music are setup. There’s no way for me to actually see that path when I go to Browse Folders. I do see one that says /sdcard/TV Shows, but again that doesn’t show any further info.

As a test I pasted in the same path that’s used in Music to see if any albums showed up in TV Shows and they didn’t. Does the file type matter? Will it show up empty if the type is wrong, or will it show files but not allow me to play them?

Best,
Nick

THAT is an important point
It implies that the Plex Media Server on your Shield can indeed not see the folder (otherwise you should be able to select it and even navigate into its subfolders).
I’ve found a similar topic from some time ago where the following instruction fixed this. However this refers to a connected network drive!! Can you double check if the same options/actions exist for the USB devices as well?

Yes – a tv show library will only scan for tv shows (requiring folders to be structured properly and files named according to the Plex naming convention)

Hi there.

Thanks for the reply.

I don’t actually see that option in my Nvidia Shield. There is a section called Storage, but not one called Storage and Reset, and none of the options in there match.

Might be worth clarifying, though, that I’m not seeing TV shows on the Plex website either when my drive is connected directly, this isn’t exclusive to the Nvidia Shield.

Can you explain what you mean or share some screenshots?

Hi Tom.

What I mean is that although I’ll be using Plex on the Nvidia Shield eventually, all the screenshots I sent were from my Mac using the Plex web dashboard, and TV Shows are coming up empty there as well as through the Nvidia Shield app.

So this isn’t an issue with the Nvidia per se, it’s an issue with Plex.

I think you’re confusing things…
From your logs and earlier descriptions I understand you’re running your Plex Media Server on the Nvidia Shield.
If your server cannot access the tv shows, they will show on none of the clients – no matter if you try to access them through the Shield client or Plex Web… and when it comes to Plex Web it won’t matter from which computer you access the app.
