TV Shows not showing up

I’m a Plex Pass member. I have been for a long time. I’ve had issues I could figure out or had someone from theses forums help me fix problems. This one is baffling me… I’m sure this has been a problem and asked before, but I couldn’t find it…

Here is my issue:
I bought all the seasons of Macgyver on DVD & started adding them in plex like normal (Folder:\Macgyver\Season 1\Ep name S1E1.mkv), only some episodes show up with different seasons. Not all seasons nor episodes. I added them to Itunes and they work fine with Apple TV. I’ve even added the Meta data to the files too…

What I have done is this

1-Double checked that all are playable
2-Double checked the Meta tags
3-Re-ripped with no meta tags (named like they should be)
4-Made a library with just the one folder picked (in case plex sees them as other files by chance)

Any other Ideas that I may be over looking? Thanks in advance… Mel…

First your naming is not quite right try:
MacGyver (1985)\Season 01\MacGyver (1985) - s01e01 - Pilot

Further there may be a problem with your structure. In general follow the guidelines exactly!!!:

TV Shows <— The library points here
---------TV Show Name (Year first aired if needed) <— This folder holds the season folders
------------------Season 01 <— This folder holds all the episodes for season 01
-------------------------ShowName - s01e01 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------ShowName - s01e02 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------And so on for the rest of season 01
------------------Season 02 <— This folder holds all the episodes for season 02
-------------------------ShowName - s02e01 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------ShowName - s02e02 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------And so on for the rest of season 02
------------------Season 03 <— This folder holds all the episodes for season 03
-------------------------ShowName - s03e01 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------ShowName - s03e02 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------And so on for the rest of season 03
---------2nd TV Show Name (Year first aired if needed) <— This folder holds the season folders
------------------Season 01 <— This folder holds all the episodes for season 01
-------------------------2nd ShowName - s01e01 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------2nd ShowName - s01e02 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------And so on for the rest of season 01
------------------Season 02 <— This folder holds all the episodes for season 02
-------------------------2nd ShowName - s02e01 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------2nd ShowName - s02e02 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------And so on for the rest of season 02
------------------Season 03 <— This folder holds all the episodes for season 03
-------------------------2nd ShowName - s03e01 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------2nd ShowName - s03e02 - Episode Name.ext
-------------------------And so on for the rest of season 03
Note: The year after the show name is only normally needed or desired if there is more that one show with exactly the same name. Check http://thetvdb.com/ if you are not sure and match exactly the name used there. There are some exceptions to this where the year is needed even if there is no other show of that name or if the show does not have the year in TheTVDB.
There are naming methods other than the above that work but this does work 99.9% of the time.
If you are going to use Plex it is best to use the proper naming conventions so Plex makes the best match possible. Trying to force Plex to use other naming methods is just asking for frustration.

Thanks for the info… I just did that… I tested the first season (one that was not showing up) and did exactly what you said… Re did the library, pointing only to that folder. for some reason, nothing is showing up… Videos are in M4V files. I even reripped the first season as MKV and MP4 (which I know I really didn’t need to do using Handbrake and makemkv) still nothing… It’s almost like Plex doesn’t like Macgyver… I know… That’s stupid… But every other show I have put on there (including threes company and golden girls (which I hate), my wife’s dvd’s she bought) are on here right… I could understand if they were showing up as different videos or something. But not showing up at all??? It’s almost like they don’t exist. Any other ideas by chance?

After you renamed everything did you perform the “Plex dance?”

Move the entire section to where Plex does not see it.
Update the library in Plex.
Empty trash.
Remove bundles.
Move the entire section back into your Plex library.
Scan the library again.

You must perform each step in order without skipping any steps.

If that does not fix the problem then something else is going on. Scanner logs would probably help but I do not really speak Plexilog so others will need to look at them.

Plexweb/Settings/Server/Agents/
Move Local Media Assets to the bottom of every Agent list under every tab in Shows and Movies.

Then Plex Dance.

Just an update. I just reinstalled my os (fresh install of windows 10) and reinstalled plex and added the library back… It still doesn’t see all the files (or at least doesn’t show them as in the library that I can find). As far as I can tell, all the other shows are there… Just not that one show… Oh well… I guess it’s a lost cause… Thanks for all the help…

No cause is lost - it’s just misunderstood.

Log Files:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files
Drag zip file to message window and drop it.

Thanks for your help juiceWSA, I just don’t understand why it’s not showing all of the one tv show. If I get the logs, will it show where the files are or will it just be a way of testing to see what’s going on?

Logs tell many stories. Without them we’re just guessing.

Here are the logs. Should I have removed the folder with the shows first, then added them back? Also, I put the same folder on my other plex server (same network) to see what happens, and it’s doing the same thing…

Before you ask, I’m running another plex because of the recording TV issue plex has. It’s running an older version just for me to record TV.

This is a disaster zone:
G:\Itunes\TV Shows\MacGyver
G:\Itunes\TV Shows\MacGyver (2016) <---- this one is correct - one out of… many
G:\Itunes\TV Shows\MacGyver 1985
G:\Itunes\TV Shows\MacGyver_ The TV Movies <— won’t work - whack it
G:\Itunes\TV Shows\New Macgyver
G:\Itunes\TV Shows\MacGyver (2016)\Season 02\S02E01-DIY or DIE.mp4

Basically remove everything in your TV Show Library for MacGyver and start over

  1. remove all files and folders for MacGyver - all of them
  2. scan library files
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— scan library files, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. Move Local Media Assets to the bottom of every Agent List under All Tabs in Shows and Movies here:
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents
Do NOT disable - simply drag LMA to bottom of list and drop it

Name and Structure two New MacGyver TV Show Folders OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY as shown:

G:\Itunes\TV Shows\ <— I would start a brand new TV Show Folder, 'cause this one is a mess. Leave this one - remove all MacGyvers from it. Create a New TV Show Library Folder: G:\TV Shows. Create the two MacGyver show structures OUTSIDE THE NEW LIBRARY as shown below - then move them into the new TV Show Library:

G:\TV Shows
…MacGyver (1985)
…Season 00
…MacGyver (1985) - S00E01 - Lost Treasure of Atlantis.xxx
…MacGyver (1985) - S00E02 - Trail to Doomsday.xxx
…Season 01
…MacGyver (1985) - S01E01.xxx
…MacGyver (1985) - S01E02 - Episode Name Optional.xxx
…and so on…
…MacGyver (2016)
…Season 01
…MacGyver (2016) - S01E01.xxx
…MacGyver (2016) - S01E02 - Episode Name Optional.xxx
…and so on…

Scan New Library Files

Filebot (link in my signature) can do that for you almost instantly - or you can do it by hand, but it has to be done as shown or you’re wasting your time.

Thanks… I know it may be a mess, but I was using Itunes because we used apple tv’s, but since I switched to Roku’s and using plex, I am having to try to fix things. Thanks for the information… I just bought Filebot and I am trying it out on the shows now… It looks promising…

Thanks… That was great… It worked like a charm… I’m goign to start redoing my shows though… I just wish it was an easier way to fix the meta data for the movies I have. I’m using MetaX now. Anyway… Thanks… Filebot worked great…

The best metadata to have in video files is NONE. Proper naming and structuring is all that’s necessary.

Thank you so much for the detailed directions!! I was having issues getting my TV episodes in Plex correctly and the combo of your info and using The TV Database website episode listing saved the day!!

I been having this pain in the a$$ problem for the past few years. FINALLY figured it out, no need to do all the crazy steps above. All you have to do is 1. Go to your movie library 2. Right click to edit 3. Click on Advance 4. Scroll down to Scanner and chose Plex Video File Scanner instead of Plex Movie Scanner. Done!

Thank You Dangsta! This is the right fix!
But for me its located in Settings, Manage, Libraries, Movies, Edit, Advanced and Scroll down, Scanner. I switched the value to Video File Scanner. Now everything shows up! Thumbs up!
