TV shows on shuffle causing plex to crash on Nvidia shield

Server Version#: Newest
Player Version#: Most Recent

On my Nvidia Shield Pro since the last update has a crashing issue when watching TV shows. First episode works great but about 30 seconds to a minute after the start the next episode goes really choppy and either crashes plex or just locks up. These are all episodes I’ve watched many times so there’s no issues with the specific episodes. Ive confirmed it works fine on the older app version and have confirmed this issue on two Shield Pros on the newest update. Nothing I’ve tried so far fixes the issue.

Do you know if the content is transcoding or if they have a particular codec. I put a show on shuffle on my shield and it has gone through a few episodes without issue.

is that the the 1.31.0 Plex Pass beta or the public 1.30.2 ?

Happening for us in regular series not shuffle. The network usage spikes, the whole episode seems to be buffered in, but the episode just stutters like crazy. Basically unusable currently. Also on the shield with latest available updates for both client and windows pc server (beta channel). I really think this issue is severe enough that the app should be downgraded until it’s fixed, we honestly can’t use it.

It doesn’t appear to be transcoding when the issue happens. I have everything set to direct play. And it also doesn’t seem to matter if shuffle is used or not. Shuffle is just how I generally watch comedies that aren’t new. I’ve tested this on multiple TV shows. There was an update last night for the Shield and it seems a little better but it’s still present. Modern Family played 3 episodes before the issue occurred. I then tested a few more shows and the second episode did the same thing. My parents are on an older version of the app and they have no issues so I think it came in the update that I think happened on the 6th or around there.

This is the bandwidth that is used when a new (affected) episode starts. It goes down to practically nothing after the episode is running for a bit.

This is the codec of one of my episodes that just caused Plex to crash. Again it was the second episode. No shuffle this time. Direct Play on everything.

This is exactly what I see, it looks like the server sends way too much for the shield to deal with. Can you check the usage on a “working” playback?

Also, ours often seems to fall back to direct stream during this issue, is that the case for you?

I’ve got the same issue both with and without transcoding, on a Shield and also on a Chromecast with Google TV. It’s always the second episode that plays, it happens about a minute in, and the app itself crashes or playback crashes.

can you please provide your android logs after the crash.

It’s not crashing for me it’s just not playing the file properly

Plex_Logs.txt (4.7 MB)

Mine doesn’t crash all the time either. It’s just plays the next show very choppy and sometimes it crashes if it gets really bad. The logs attached are from an actual crash while I was trying to fast forward an affected episode. I also have a video if that can be uploaded of what it looks like.

Did the logs help at all? Watching TV shows right now is pretty unusable.

Seeing similar behavior on Shield TV Pro and also Chromecast w/Google TV. Things play fine and then randomly stutter or halt playback. Backing out to Plex dashboard and starting playback again and playback resumes until next failure. Local connection, not transcoding.

Seems like I’ve encountered this for about two weeks now across a few client updates.

Not really a rhyme or reason that I see. Seems to often happen during credits. Tried to observe via the Dash app, only thing that seemed suspect was network usage flooring about a minute or two prior to show finishing and the credits rolling. That being said it’s also happened shortly after shows have started.

Looks like there was an update last night but I can confirm it didn’t resolve anything. It looks like it was even for AVC support but it’s still doing the same thing.

Seems like there may be a player update (9.17) on the way that addresses this issue:

Other seemingly related posts suggest this started with the 9.15 release and due to an exoplayer update.

Would you be able to try the build below to see if this solves the problem you are experiencing?

Problem has been found and will be fixed in v9.16.1.
