Two different movies register as partially watched when you only have watched one

Server Version#:4.101.1
Player Version#:Not sure

I have two files for The Fellowship of the Ring. I have one labeled as
Title: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring -Part 1
Sort Title: Lord of the Rings 1 - The Fellowship of the Ring

and the other as
Title: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring -Part 2
Sort Title: Lord of the Rings 2 - The Fellowship of the Ring

When I partially watch one, the other will show as partially watched as well. If I try to start watching the second, it will try to resume where I left off at on the first one.

Any idea why these are linked and how I can unlink them? This also happens for any two-disc movies I have.

Thanks for any help on this!

To get player version go here:

Also, make sure that you name the files properly per plex docs. Not sure what you mean by “discs” - do you mean you use Plex to play the actual DVD? Or did you copy the .iso file and convert to a knowm filetype that Plex then can index and play in the client?

Plex Documentation → Your Media → Naming & Organizing Your Movie Files

See the Movies Split Across Multiple Files section of the Naming & Organizing docs.

Consider joining the files together. In general, that will give you a better playback experience, as not all Plex clients handle “stacked media” well. See [HowTo]: joining multi-part movies files with MKVtoolnix GUI.

If you want to stay with multiple files, make sure you follow Plex’s naming requirements.

Plex Dance the movie after renaming/reorganizing.

Example:

/Movies <-- folder added to movie library.
.../The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) <-- movie_name (year)
....../The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - pt1.ext
....../The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - pt2.ext
  • Leave out restricted characters (:, /, etc) from the folder/file names. Do not substitute a dash, underscore, etc.
  • ext = mkv/mp4/etc
