Ubuntu 17.04 - Webmin - HTTP Tunnel - Unable to log in to Plex, "There was a problem signing in"

Hopefully this is the right section for this question. I want to be able to use the HTTP Tunnel feature in Webmin to be able to log in to Plex on my remote server, where the Plex server is running off of. I can of course do this via tunneling on my PC, but I want to be able to do it thru the HTTP Tunnel in Webmin so I can access it anywhere by just logging in to Webmin. The HTTP Tunnel in Webmin works fine for everything I have tried except Plex. I have tried all Plex login page URLs, from http://[serversIP]:32400/manage to http://app.plex.tv. The login pages all load, but on trying to log in, with any account, I get a generic “There was a problem signing in to Plex” error. There is no firewall blocking the tunnel, and I made sure the system/hardware time on my server was correct (found a two year old forum post for a similar issue and someone suggested system time being incorrect), and I am not sure what else to try. I am hoping someone here can maybe assist, or at least give me a hint as to what is causing the issue. I was thinking it may be part of some security system within Plex seeing a “strange” logon signature and blocking the attempt?

When your server is properly associated (signed in) to your Plex.tv account, you won’t need any special tools/programs to access it. When configured for Remote Access, you’ll be able to play from it as well.

I assume you are remote from your server. Presumably a VPS / host somewhere ? If not , please advise.

The problem “signing into Plex” can be twofold.

  1. your browser / tool isn’t running https to sign into Plex.tv (where the browser Plex/Web app connects)
  2. your server can’t sign in.

Without more information, it’s not possible to tell which case this is.

Please provide more information about
a) the client and os you’re accessing from
b) the server os, location, etc

Also please provide Plex version information. PMS 1.x.x.x . If you see Version 3.x.x.x , this is the Plex/Web version and not the Server version.

Yes I am familiar with how to use Plex… And yes my server is remote, as I stated. The server is running Ubuntu 17.04.

I want to be able to log in via the Webmin HTTP Tunnel so I have direct local access to the Plex server in case I need to re-associate or fix something (which I have had to do multiple times lately since updates keep breaking things…). I am trying to log in to Plex via a browser window (tried all browsers) which is logged in to Webmin, and Webmin is running off of the same remote server that Plex is.
The version of Plex is irrelevant it turns out. I cannot log in to any Plex websites via the Webmin HTTP Tunnel, all give the same error. Plex homepage, Plex forums, etc, no Plex pages allow my to log in via the Webmin tunnel.

You’re correct in that you can’t use http . It’s not allowed outside the local LAN. It’s been this way since 0.9.16.x . All WAN communications to Plex servers are https.

If Webmin creates a proper SSH, port forwarded tunnel, then you’ll be fine.
If not, you’ll need to do it the old fashioned way.

thanks. but this is not working … directs me directly to the next remote server listed on plex.tv
