Unable to access "Film" files

Hi, my Plex server is on my main desktop computer which is linked to a home theatre receiver on the same network. I can access my “Music” folder and play music files. I can access my “Films” folder and see all the files but there is a question mark next to each of them and I’m unable to play them.
I’ve searched through several Support articles but haven’t found anything to solve this. I am new to Plex so maybe looking in the wrong places.
I’d be grateful for any help.
Thanks,
Lee

I assume that you are starting playback via controlling the AVR with its remote control. That is basically trying to use the DLNA player feature of your AVR.
Support for DLNA in Plex is very rudimentary and hasn’t been developed in a long time. If you want to play media from your plex server in your home cinema, you should do so by plugging an additional device in to your AVR. A device which has a native Plex client available: https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/player-apps-platforms/

If the computer with your Plex server is close enough to the AVR, you can even connect the two via a HDMI connection. Which allows you to use Plex HTPC as your player. Download below.

Thanks for getting back to me.
On my TV I select the AVR and using the remote for the AVR I select “Home Network”. This brings up a list of servers includng “Plex Media Server” which then shows three folders, Video, Music and Photos.
Inside the Video folder I can select “Films” then “All Films” and this brings up a list of all the films I have inside the Films folder on the Plex app on my computer.
The issue is each film has a question mark next to it and I can’t access it.
I’m wondering if the question mark is indicating an access problem but I’ve done all I can think of by reviewing settings on my computer, the Plex app and the AVR but haven’t found a solution.
Does all of the above still suggest to you that I need additional software as you’ve mentioned?

Yes. The procedure you’re describing is that for accessing Plex server via DLNA.
But using Plex via DLNA is quite pointless, because by doing so you are not only disabling access restrictions per-user, but are also disabling pretty much every more than basic Plex feature.

Ok thanks. As an experiment, I connected my TV via WIFI to my computer (on which sits the Plex server) and I can access all my Plex folders and play all my files. If I then select “TV” on the AVR and mute the TV sound, I get 5:1 surround sound. Not sure why this works but it does and I should have done it hours ago!
Thanks so much for your support though. I’m very grateful.

Lee
