Unable to connect to securely & Can't authenticate user

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151-914ddd2b3
Player Version#: 9.8.2
Synology DSM 7.1

I just recently just a few days ago went through the steps of reclaiming my server to fix access after buying a subscription see here and all was working then and I could connect from plex.tv.

Last night went to cast something from my mobile and can’t connect, get sign in failed user could not be authenticated I’ve tried this both from home and via the mobile network. Toggled security as suggested elsewhere a few times, stopped and started the server, enabled and disabled remote access a few times all to no avail. Also now again I only have local connect both from a windows and a linux browser otherwise it is Unable to connect to securely. Surely it is not necessary to reinstall everytime I want to do something?

@ian.blakeley_outlook.com

No, it’s not necessary to reinstall every time.

Something is wrong

Please do the following:

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Open Filestation
  3. Navigate to: PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
  4. Right-click LogsCompress to Logs.zip
  5. Download that zip file
  6. Attach here.

I’ll see what silliness happened.

Thanks.
Logs.zip (4.2 MB)
Managed to zip the whole folder first time, knew it should not be 4GB

Going to start pointing out errors as I encounter them

Don’t know what that device is but it’s not connecting securely / not able to do https.

To resolve.

  1. Install the Synology text editor app (Package Center) if not installed.
  2. Stop Plexd
  3. Open FileStation,
  4. Navigate to: PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
  5. Right-click Preferences.xmlOpen with Text Editor
  6. Window pops open
  7. On the bottom line, carefully cursor through it looking for secureConnections=
  8. Carefully remove the entire secureConnections="x" preference and value.
  9. Save the file.
  10. Start PMS
  11. Reopen browser window to PMS.
  12. Restart player connection at device 192.168.70.8.

Secondary - Permission denied

Thanks.

That’s actually my windows laptop which I tried last night it was working I suspect the issue is from when I was toggling preferred/required and it was initially connected http certainly I could connect afterwards.

I’ve removed security=1 from preferences and restarted. I still cannot login to the account on plex.tv from my mobile that would be 70.40 in the logs just get user could not be authorised still and if I check there from my desktop the server is still unavailable.

Remote access is enabled and I had a green tick, checked back 5 minutes later and it is switched to red. No idea if this is related or not. If I hit retry it goes back to green at least for a while. Verified I can access sign in after completing 2FA to my server via the external IP still cannot sing into my account on the mobile or access via plex.tv

Unsure why the music folder shows not available, just checked can play albums from there, my music is actually in a subfolder. My wife’s photos, that was not set I’ve given the Plex system user read access.

Is it worthwhile to change password and try to login back in to everything or do I risk locking myself right out?

At this point,

  1. Uninstall PMS using the KEEP radio button (the default)
  2. Reinstall and select the Install using Plex Claim Token option
  3. Click Get Plex Claim Token hyperlink
  4. New browser tab opens
  5. COPY the link
  6. Return to the installer window and PASTE the token in the box on the form.
  7. Click NEXT NEXT DONE and it will start installing.

If the NAS and plex.tv can communicate ok, it will respond with “Claimed by: YourPlexUsername” in the message as installation completes.

(Claiming with token takes an extra 15-20 seconds because of the communication between the installer and Plex.tv)

Upon successful reclaim, Open the Syno via LAN IP (not remotely or quick connect) to ensure everything syncs back up.

It is exactly the same. I got claimed by Ian.Bl, opened on the LAN all okay, look at my account on Plex.TV Unable to connect to "Aragorn" securely. and on my mobile can’t authenticate user.

I found it.

There is no certificate at Plex.tv but PMS locally has one which isn’t expired.
We will reset the local certificate and allow the two to sync again.

  1. Stop PMS.
  2. Open FileStation
  3. Navigate to: PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Cache
  4. Remove the cert-v2.dat file
  5. Start PMS.
  6. Give it one minute to come up and get settled.

Now retest

Thanks. I don’t seem to have that file, the closest is
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 PlexMediaServer PlexMediaServer 4.4K Aug 18 22:22 cert-v2.p12
is that the one? There are several .dat files but not with similar names.

@ian.blakeley_outlook.com

I’m not sure what you did but your server now has a certificate.

That tells me PMS asked for one.

Is everything now working?

I took a punt it was the file I referenced above.

I can see via plex.tv on Firefox but not on Chromium there I get The username or password is incorrect. Repeated attempts may temporarily disable sign in. And I cannot access via my mobile app either. I think this might be a screw up on my part at some point in the past.

I did get in on Chromium with a saved password that’s old and got presented with a different userid, same email. I think I may well have inadvertently got two accounts with the same email.

Did you have Chromium save your password?

Looking at the account you use to sign into this forum,

  1. I see the same email I always have
  2. I see 2FA has been enabled.

Plex will not permit you to have two usernames with the same email.
(Single-Sign-On (SSO) is used by Plex)

It let me in with the old password, then I realised. Came out and tried to use the password I have saved with FF and my password manager and then cannot. I deleted cookies, okay now signed in from Chromium. Retried the mobile, okay too.

Thanks for your time and trouble.
