Unable to connect to "SHIELD Android TV" securely

I have my Plex Media Server running on an NVIDIA Shield TV and it works fine. Everything looks great and works smoothly. The problem however, is when accessing Plex through the plex.tv website on a computer browser (not the app–the app works fine) it tells me that it is unable to connect securely. If I select the option to connect unsecurely, then it will work. This happens if I am on the local network or away…it doesn’t matter.

My setup is:

NVIDIA Shield TV (Plex Media Server)>ethernet switch>ethernet wire through the house>another ethernet switch in other room with both Synology NAS (library storage) and router connected to it.

What’s puzzling is that it works fine, except for the ability to connect securely in a web browser. It happens on desktop browsers and mobile browsers on multiple devices.

I have port forwarding set up, and for what it’s worth remote access occasionally takes a minute to connect, reporting the box as “OFFLINE” before ultimately connecting to it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Mine works fine with an unsecure connection though. I’m trying to figure out why secure connections via web browsers are not working.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections#toc-4

If the secure connections setting is disabled in your servers network settings then players can’t connect securely.

@OttoKerner I already tried going through that support page and the only relevant setting was the DNS which, as the article suggests, I tried changing to the Google Public DNS, but that didn’t fix it. I’m using a Verizon FiOS G1100 router. The other thing the article mentions—DNS rebinding, I could not seem to find anything on that within the router settings.

@BigWheel It’s enabled.

Shouldn’t need to but I would restart your server. check your logs to see if it is getting a security certificate when remote access connects.

@BigWheel I restarted the NVIDIA Shield TV, which didn’t fix it. Then after restarting it, I logged out of Plex on the Shield TV/Plex Media Server and logged back in. Plex started saying it found a new media server named “localhost.” I connected to that one (even though it’s the same unit) and now it works. However, it still thinks “SHIELD Android TV” is still a different server and it obviously can’t connect to it, but connecting securely now works nonetheless.

UPDATE: 24 hours later it’s back to having the same problem. Moreover, trying to access the Plex server via the mobile app remotely results in it saying that the server is offline. I have to open a browser, log in, then it will say it can’t connect securely, so I’ll press the button to connect insecurely. Then I’m able to connect to the server, and the mobile app will also be able to connect, and no longer says the server is offline.

What is causing this?

I own 2 Shields… 1 pro (500GB) and 1 ‘regular’ version (16GB)…
Both are in the same local network.

I suddenly had problems with the 16GB one not being available anymore and couldn’t find the problem (the 500GB one was still working fine).

After updating both shields and removing the 16GB one from plex’s authorized devices and doing the re-adding procedure (with the code thing in the browser), now the 500GB suddenly stopped being available…
After going to that same procedure for the 500GB one of removing and re-adding it as an authorized devices I also get the problem of it being available as a server locally on my shield devices, and on my android devices (both phones and tablets) but not available locally on my laptop.
Over the internet (remote) i can select it on my laptop though and it works fine, but i can’t get it to connect securely?! (the other shield and my NAS both have secure connections).
Also, when playing something using the 500GB version, it’s activity doesn’t show its playing something anymore (that sine pulse icon in the top right corner of the player).
The 16GB works fine (after removing and re-adding it to authorized devices as i mentioned before).

I also have a plex server running on my NAS on the same network… no plex server issues there.

I can’t get my head around what might be the cause of this. Can someone pls help me?
This is driving me crazy and its getting kind of frustrating always with these issues of plex suddenly not working anymore. When it works plex is awesome and I’d love to recommend it to everyone and anyone but these constant issues really stop me from recommending it to or installing it for anyone who isn’t a bit computer-savy and even then.
Anyway… Thank you in advance…

Noone?

that is not a way to sign into a server. if you mean entering code at https://www.plex.tv/link that is only the player. when you go to general settings does it show it is claimed?

does the secure connection settings say it is on required or preferred but just not working?

Yes that’s what i was referring to (the www.plex.tv/link page)
How do I find out it is “claimed”? And if it turns out it is not claimed, how do I do this properly?
It (the shield device) shows up in the settings yes and I can adjust them.
The general section of the settings shows the same stuff as the other servers (except that it has a different name naturally).

In the network section of the settings it’s secure connection currently is set on preferred… Im affraid of changing it to required because I did that some time before and I wasn’t able to connect it anymore through the internet and thus not able to change it back to preferred… (I’m currently on a different location, I’ll be able to change it locally in the weekend if all goes well)

in the general settings of server it will show you as signed in. This is different than the web app.

Yes, it shows as signed in.

it seems as though Plex TV thinks your server’s secure connection setting is set to disabled for some reason. If it shows as set to preferred in interface the only thing i can think is to restart the server when you get home.

possibly somme DNS issue not sending the correct info to plex.tv i suppose but if the other one works that seems unlikely

Yeah, i’tried rebooting it several times. Didn’t fix it.
I thought about reinstalling plex but then id loose all my user ratings, watched/unwatched status and manually added data etc… Or is there an easy way to back that up and restore it after a fresh reinstall?

there is not on Shield unfortunately. but when you get home will be more likely to try things to see why it is not saving secure connection setting. I asked someone to look at your account and that is definitely the issue. plex.tv shows it as being disabled.

In the plex media player (on my laptop) I can connect to the problematic shield and it is set to preferred here… I tried setting it to disable, pressed apply, and set it to preferred again, pressed apply… nothing changed.

So, I tried it through the plex web app (via https://app.plex.tv/desktop).
I got a warning that it couldn’t connect securely to the shield (except for the other default apps I dont use like youtube etc).
So I press the “Allow once” button. This way I can connect to it.
Again, I go to its settings and in the network section it is set to “preferred”. I change it to “disabled”.
I close the firefox tab.
I re-open the plex web app in the Edge browser in private mode (sometimes that makes a difference because of cache etc… I doubt it will help here but its a small effort so it wont hurt to try).
After logging in and re-launching the web-app in the Edge browser running in private mode it still says it is unable to connect securely to the shield and I have to press the “allow once” button again and changed the secure connection setting to “preferred”.
Closed, re-opened Edge in private mode and re-opened the plex web app…Same thing (can not connect securely)… This time I went for a gamble and selected the “allow always” instead of “allow once” button.
Now when i go to the settings it is set to “disabled”… I change it to “preferred”.
I sign out before I close Edge (maybe makes a difference for some strange reason).
Re-open edge in private mode
Go to the plex web app…
Still get a message that I can’t connect to the shield securely…
I click the connect insecurely once button.
Check the shield’s settings… Its set to “preferred”.
So, some strange stuff is going on here. It used to work and I can’t recall changing anything in terms of my local network setup.

Yesterday, I managed Plex to not be able to connect to my other shield (the one that worked). Only thing I did was closing a video that was watching on my tablet. I don’t mean closing the app, but closing the playback of the video in plex.
I don’t even have the option to connect to it unsecurely… It just says “connection unavailable”.
Pressed the retry button several times but no success…
So I guess something must’ve frozen up plex or android.

“Plex recommends shield as the most powerfull media player…”. :expressionless:
I have literally nothing else but Plex installed on the shield.
Thanks for trying to help me btw, I know its probably not your fault personally, but I hope you understand this is frustrating.

In laymen terms: what does it really mean to connect insecurely to my shield (or having it set to preferred so it still is possible to connect insecurely)? Does it compromise the security of my home network?
