Hi All - I’ve been having this issue for months and it just got worse. I’ve always been able to download my videos for offline playback without issues for years since I became a Plex Pass user. However, as of a few months ago, any time I try to download something from an outside connection I get the error message

Relay Connection Error: Unable to establish a direct connection to the media server, please ensure your device is able to connect to it without a relay connection

This happens on all my mobile iOS devices. However up until today, I was at least able to download shows at home on my network. Now, I can no longer do so. This is super frustrating as I use the offline feature quite frequently. Can anyone let me know what the issue might be? I will share my mobile log as well.

Would need the server logs to confirm, but I don’t believe your “Remote Access” is working. Local is failing to resolve to server “J****” and succeeds to “N*****” which may not allow downloads. So this means you have DNS and probably DNS Rebinding issues.

Back in July they disabled the ability to download over Plex’s “Relay” connection. Up until then, many thought their Remote Access was working when it wasn’t.

Yeah it definitely seems my Remote Access isn’t working. Is it ok to post my server logs here? If not please let me know.

People have varying opinions on it, I do because it helps out the Support staff to be able to see what is going on without playing 20 questions.

It will have your email address and public IP.

Ah, ok I’m a little nervous about posting that kind of sensitive info in the wild. Is there a way I can post a redacted version, or a version with just the need-to-know info?

If this is what you see:

Then you can skip the logs for now and try working through

Yup that’s what I’m seeing. Thanks, I will work through this.

So I went through the troubleshooting guide and nothing worked :frowning: My router supports UPnP, it is enabled and Plex is allowed through my firewall. Nothing works. What’s even weirder now is that my iPad can download just fine locally (though not outside my network), but the Plex app on my phone gives me the Relay Error as usual. Really am stumped, here.

DM me the logs and I will look for double nat and such.

ISP name?
Router Make/Model?

May I be of assistance here?

Is the connection issue both locally and remote?

Hi Chuck; yes the issue is both locally and remote on different iOS devices. For example, my iPhone won’t download locally or remote at all, but my iPad will only download locally.

First order of business on any Syno:

Are you using the Syno Firewall?
– Most of us turn it off because our modem/router and its built-in firewall is more than enough for home use
– If you have it enabled then you have a whole bunch of ports to manually open for Plex to work properly on LAN (before you can get to opening for remote)

This is what I, and most of us, do:

What’s your status?

I confirm that I am not using Syno’s Firewall.

Would you please:

  • Stop PMS
  • Open FileStation
  • Navigate: PlexMediaServer / AppData / Plex Media Server
  • Right-Click: LogsCompress to Logs.zip
  • Download that ZIP file
  • Attach (upload) it here. (or let me know and I’ll open a PM for private)

Done! Please allow me to PM it to you, thanks.

@ChuckPa Hi Chuck sorry to bother but I thought I’d follow up as I’m still experiencing this issue.

Any update on this?

Im having the same issue, only it’s only on one device. My iPhone downloads fine, my sons ipad i get the “relay connection error”

Hey there - yes, the issue I was having was that my ISP’s router/modem combo was not in “bridge” mode so it was conflicting with my personal router, so once they switched that off everything began working again as intended.

If it’s only your son’s iPad and not other devices, that might be a different issue from what I was experiencing, since it was happening on all devices for me.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Yes, I believe you’re right, since my son’s iPad is the only one impacted, it’s not the same issue as you. But it is the same error message unfortunately.

The search for a fix continues…
