Unable to play media on Synology DS214play

Server Version#:DSM 6.2 2 24922.4
Player Version#:1.18.7.2457-77cb9455c
I have been using Plex on my DS214play for several years with no major problems, but 4 days ago, suddenly I could not access it. I manually updated the software (listed above) and was able to access it again, however it would not play any of my media and said the drive was not attached. All my media is on a USB drive attached to the NAS and have no problem playing it through Synology’s Video Station app. I did a manual scan of my library and it picked up a show that I had only just added so can’t see how it can say the drive is not attached. Another strange thing is that before I updated the software, all my episodes were in their respective show folders and now they are all individual (one show has over 70 episodes), so would like to know how to restore to how they were before?.

From time to time (particularly when there is a DSM update) DSM will forget permissions on shared folders (which the USB drive is listed as in Control Panel - Shared Folders - usbshareX

Edit the share - Permissions tab.

Verify user plex has access.

Video Station works because it runs with administrator privilege and can do anything it wants.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have checked the settings as you suggest, but Plex is ticked as having read/write permission.

Let’s see what PMS is trying to do.

  1. Verify you have DEBUG logging enabled and VERBOSE logging disabled. Don’t forget to SAVE if you make changes

  2. Stop PMS

  3. Start PMS and wait two minutes for it to stabilize (i want to capture all it does in that initial startup sequence without interruption if possible)

  4. Now “Scan Files” for that section

  5. After it finishes, - Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs

  6. Attach the ZIP file it gives you here with your next reply.

Thanks again for your reply and please find the requested log file attached. I have been playing around trying to find a solution and have found that a few of my media files do play in Plex while the vast majority don’t. I had made no changes to my media library before I started experiencing problems. Something that I thought might have some bearing was that I updated the firmware on my Beyonwiz U4 PVR around the time my problems started. This uses the Linux OS and one of the included apps is Dreamplex which I assume is an unofficial Plex app. I have never had much success getting it to work properly but since the upgrade gets as far as saying it can’t find the database. Thinking that this may have some relevance, I uninstalled it, but has made no difference. I have also attached a screenshot of the error message I get when trying to play media.

Thanking you for your help.

I don’t know what a Beyonwiz is nor do I have have any idea what DreamPlex is.

Anything outside the Synology box, or third party software is beyond my ability to help.

As a basic test:

  1. Create a share named “Test-Movies” and give user Plex permission to read it.
  2. Now copy one of those USB movies which gives you problems into that share
  3. Create a “Test-Movies” section and point it at the Test-Movies share.
  4. Let it index and add the movie
  5. Now attempt to play it.

i’ve followed your instructions, but the test file doesn’t show up in Plex. Did anything show up in the log I sent you? I only mentioned the Beyonwiz and DreamPlex as a trouble shooting action I had taken in case it had any bearing, didn’t expect you to be fanilular with these items. Once again, thanks for your help.

Adding a movie to a new share on the main volume which you’ve given Plex permission to read should be a trivial operation.

If it’s not showing up then some other permissions are interfering with the file itself.

I would like you to go into that shared folder and , by examining Properties, make certain user Plex has permission,

It will look like this if Plex does.

If not, Add plex there and “apply to this folder, sub folders, and files”
