I run PLEX (lifetime pass holder) on a SYNOLOGY NAS DS918+. Following a recent update, I can’t access my media, with an ‘UNAVALABLE’ banner in red next to everything. This is not any fault of mine as I have installed countless updates in the past.
Can anyone tell me how to rectify this…and can PLEX consider spending some resources on a real technical support operation where human can converse with human? This is becoming a little ridiculous, with your current setup really short-changing users. I am having to spend HOURS trying to solve a problem that ordinarily a tech support professional could fix in minutes. You can’t just keep telling us to ‘check the forums’. What a cop out
The attempt on PLEX’s website to address this issue is rather feeble and does not help me in the slightest, listing several potential causes, all of which aren’t applicable, thus leaving me high and dry and completely unable to access my media from any device (Samsung 4K TV, iMac or iPhone X).
What is clear is that the problem has arisen as a result of the most recent PLEX server update, all of which I religiously download, mindful of ongoing security threats.
On another post @ChuckPa stated the following. Don’t know if this applies to your paticular setup.:
I’m sorry you had the problem and also apologize for the delay.
Control Panel - Shared Folders.
For each share containing your media:
Edit the share
Permissions tab
Give user Plex Read/Write or Read Only (whichever you prefer).
My security update somehow got released before the announcement did.
My security update (fix) puts PMS back into proper, normal, unprivileged, user mode on Synology. The old DSM 5.x bypass is no longer needed. This allows me to reduce its privilege level to “normal”.
It’s safer for the system and safer for your media.
@ChuckPa
Hello, i have exactly the same issue as @Mulatoboy .
I have done what you have said and given PLEX read only permissions.
im still getting this message, PLEX isn’t updating when i download something new to my DS918+ either.
I have also tried re-installing PLEX and restarting my NAS.
UPDATE:
Issue resolved, i just forgot to change the actual plex folder
Hello,
Same issue here. Have gone through all my shares (including the ‘plex’ folder) and ensured their permissions (numerous times now), however I’m getting the same error.
Log snippet below. This has been running for a good while (years).
Any other ideas to try?
Thanks!
ERROR - Couldn’t check for the existence of file “/volume1/Movie Master/movies/Point Break (1991)/Point Break (1991).mp4”: boost::filesystem::status: Permission denied: “/volume1/Movie Master/movies/Point Break (1991)/Point Break (1991).mp4”
Attached log as well. I saw today that a new version came out, so I updated to it hopefully. No dice, same issue. Version: PlexMediaServer-1.16.0.1226-7eb2c8f6f-x86_64

Go to **Control Panel - Shared Folders - "Movie Master" - EDIT - Permissions - Give user Plex "R/W" or "Read Only"
That was the first thing I did. Have changed it to RO,RW, off, back, upgraded DS, double and triple-checked. We agree, however, that this is the obvious issue.
Doesn’t work.
That’s another oversight. All the things changed don’t really take effect on synology (for the FIRST time this permission level changes until after reboot).
I’m asking stupid questions because it’s going to be something stupid we are all looking at and will when found.
Yes. I rebooted it.
I spent 4 days troubleshooting before I engaged here I THINK I’ve tried all the easy things I could think of.
I’ve considered rolling back a few versions to see if that will bring it back up. Working on 9 days of outage.
I am also having a similar issue after doing an upgrade.
• I am a Lifetime Plex Pass member
• My Plex server resides on a Synology DS1517+ using DSM version 6.2.2-24922-2
• Plex was working with version PlexMediaServer-1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8-x86_64 on different devices.
• I made the mistake of upgrading to version PlexMediaServer-1.16.0.1226-7eb2c8f6f-x86_64 when things went wrong.
• The Synology was rebooted.
• Nothing else was changed.
• The error “Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted” appears on different devices.
• The file does exist and will play outside of Plex.
• The drive is mounted.
• The files can be seen by Plex they just won’t play and the stated error appears.
• I then upgraded to version PlexMediaServer-1.16.1.1291-158e5b199-x86_64 and the situation did not change.
• I tried going back to version PlexMediaServer-1.13.5.5291-6fa5e50a8-x86_64 and Synology would not allow a backward update.
