Unable to register/connect to server

Server Version#: plexmediaserver-1.42.1.10060

I’ve been running a Plex server for years. After upgrading to PlexPass I’m unable to access content on my server, cannot (re)register it or otherwise use it.

It’s up and running (responds on browser interface) but otherwise might as well not be there.

I’ve deleted and reinstalled 4 times now - it does NOT start with the “register your server” as the docs says it should ..

Suggestions ?

Thx / Kaare

Try the User Credential Reset Utility

How is your workstation & PMS setup with each other?

  1. Both on the same LAN (RFC-1918 network addressing) ?
  2. Trying to access the server using either
    http://LAN.IP.of.Server:32400/web
    or
http://127.0.0.1:32400/web (if the server is running on your workstation/computer)

Are you trying to use a hostname of any type to access it? — That won’t work.

Are you use https://app.plex.tv? — That won’t work

I have been accessing it using 2) for years. No hostname have ever been used.

The server is up and answers on http://lan.ip.of.server:32400/web but no media is there anymore and I cannot add any.

As mentioned - deinstalling/removing (delete Plex files) from the server software has not helped. The server is there - but not..

Update from here.

I am still unable to “claim” my server nor can I access/add any of my original media libraries - there is no option to do so that I can find.

I’ve logged out and in. No change.

I’ve changed the IP of the server and rebooted. No change.

I’ve deleted the software and Plex-datafiles and reinstalled. No change.

Conclusion so far is, that Plex is no longer useable despite paying for it. A shame - been running it since 2015 but I guess it’s time for something else ?

I’m seeing this in the log if that helps:

Well, further update from here.

I’ve now deleted the old server (VPS hosted here) and created a new one with a different OS.

So, everything entirely and completely from scratch. New VPS and all.

No change. I can log in to my account but no access to claim/reclaim server nor am I able to add any local media.

WTF ?!?

Subscription now cancelled. This is a joke with ZERO support from Plex

@kaaresiesing

  1. BEFORE you deleted it, where was your server running?

  2. The information you posted tells me only that your attempts to log in are PERMISSION DENIED:

There are multiple ways of reclaiming the server depending on the host it runs on.

  1. On Synology, reclaiming is built into the package
  2. On any linux machine, I have created a reclaiming tool. Did you try it ?

Lastly, you might be upset but how about our need to sleep ?

You are CET time zone and I am EDT time zone. That presents challenge itself.

Hi,

I’m not sure what you mean by “where was it running” .. I own a small IT company and have my own datacenters .. so servers are/was running here. On VMware and as a FreeBSD server - which has worked for many many years.

I have tried the reclaiming tool. Didn’t help.

I close the old FreeBSD VPS and setup a new Ubuntu 24 (with a new IP) - still doesn’t work. Result is the same - server comes up, responds on the LAN-IP:32400, but it’s not possible to claim the server nor add any Media located on the server.

I can access media shared by a friend.

I’m thinking it has nothing to do with the technical setup since building a completely new server didn’t change anything. It’s likely some setting on my account with Plex, but since no direct support is possible I give up.

I would recommend using Jelly or similar moving forward ..

Yes, I’m upset because it’s a paid service and expect things to work (I certainly don’t mind paying for the server software). But, this feels like a rookie mistake from Plex - simple example is you cannot see what servers you have under your account .. and delete old ones if need be.

From the logs the server gets 401 but it does not send a token to Plex .. so no wonder it gets thrown out .. :stuck_out_tongue:

But everyone needs to sleep and I appreciate your time here.

Hi,

Update from here. It works again - everything is fine now.

Using the CredentialReset on the new Linux server worked. But, the fact a new installation did not work out of the box is still a little odd.

Anyway - I stand corrected.

But, for now everything is back and running - a 1000 thx for the help !

PMS requires managing web page (source IP) and server IP to be on the same RFC-1918 subnet or SSH-tunnel to the console of the server machine.

When you put something in a datacenter, you’re, by definition, putting it on a different network. That’s why claiming “out of the box” won’t work.

Well, that must be something fairly new - used to work.

But, VPS and Workstation are not in the same subnet and not in a 1918 anyway .. but very nice to have an explanation and solution.

Thank you very much.
