Unable to update after PMS 1.25.2.5319

I’ve been getting notified to update the server and I always accept it. Today I was wondering why it asked me again and I just realized that none of the updates have occured.

From my browser, I can click on the Download Now button. The download goes quickly. Then I click on the Install Now button and get a Retry Connection button. It spins and eventually brings me back to the general page where I can click on Install Update

Is there a way that I can manually do the update? If I download the lastest version and install it will it wipeout my settings or will it update and retain all my settings and libraries?

Try performing a manual update. It will not wipe out your settings, etc.

Download the current version from Plex (Downloads, at bottom of page).
Stop Plex Media Server (no need to uninstall).
Install the downloaded version.

Normally, this won’t happen.
However, take care if you have software like CCleaner installed. This one might wipe out your plex registry entries or the Plex data folder if you uninstall Plex manually.

Good luck getting autoupdate to work again. I’ve asked several times about it and to date, never gotten a response. I’m really not happy about it, as I’ve supported Plex since its very early inception and have had a plex pass for the entire time. I miss my dedicated “ask a ninja” forums where I could actually get a response. My autoupdate still does not work, even in the latest build Version 1.25.8.5663.

Here’s just a couple recents (to date, no response has ever been given).

Common reasons for auto-update failing:

  • The PMS install folder has been changed away from C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server
DON’T do this. There is no reason to do it. Even if you have capacity issues on C:, I’m sure there is room for the 200 MB which are the PMS executables. There can be malfunctions if you move the install folder someplace else.
  • The Plex data folder has been relocated, but the registry path of the “Plex Updater service” has not been adapted. See the “Addendum” part of the HowTo article [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows
  • The Plex Updater Service is for some reason not running. Although its startup mode should be set to “automatically, delayed” by the installer, it might for some reason still be set to “automatically” on older installs. Try changing that in the Services control panel.

Hi, I looked in the file structure for PMS and saw an Updates folder. Opened it and saw quite a few update folders named with the update version. Each folder had the update application in it. I was 2 versions behind but now was able to run the updates manually. It was very simple and now I understand why the Downloading Update message disappeared so quickly. It was already on my system. We’ll see what happens when the next update comes along.

Hi Otto,

None of the 3 instances you mentioned applied to me. I was able to manually run the update so now I’m running the current version. We’ll see what happens with the next update.

Thanks,
Alex

Did you use some kind of “un-installer” software with Plex server at one time in the past?
