I’m running the latest Plex Server on a QNAP NAS. I’ve run into a problem with TV Show descriptions not updating properly. The problem is that, whatever the source my be (I don’t now), the episode descriptions are a mile long, rather a Cliff Notes presentation of the episode. I’ve set my Agents for TV Shows to include both TMDB and TVDB, both of which show a reasonable description for the episodes in question. So far, I’ve prioritized TMDB and TVDB for metadata, and I’ve done the Plex Dance. Despite these maneuvers, I’m still seeing these ridiculous episode descriptions. Is there a way to ensure that the descriptions come only from TMDB or TVDB, if prioritizing the Agent settings doesn’t work?
UPDATE: After toiling with Plex, I found a solution; however, I’m not certain that I like the solution. As stated above, prioritizing TVDB or TMDB under agents didn’t fix the episode description problem. It would appear that the long but poorly written descriptions were being pulled from the Plex Series Scanner/Plex TV Series (I don’t know the difference between these two). In order to fix the problem, I had to click the 3 dots next to TV Shows, then Manage Library > Edit > Advanced; on that screen, I could specify TMDB or TVDB as the agent. I then initiated a library update and then refreshed all metadata for the series in question. This updated the descriptions with better written, appropriately sized, non-spoiler episode information. This was a one-time intervention for that particular show; however, I’m now wondering if I should keep the TV Show agent set to TVDB or TMDB rather than Plex Series/Plex TV series scanner. Any thoughts?
It’s generally recommended to use the Plex series agent/scanner. The other options are slowly being phased out and at some point they won’t be getting updates or bug fixes. The new scanner is also much faster
If you go back to that, you can try and switch the show order from TVDB to TMDB or vice versa to see if there’s any change in the episode descriptions
Click the pencil on the show poster and go to advanced to change it here
If you prefer one source overall you can change the order for the entire library under in the same window you were
3 dots next to the library → Manage Library → Edit → Advanced
In many cases the TMDB and TVDB will have the same show order but sometimes they don’t. You have to make sure it matches what you have on your file system
In many cases you won’t see any change at all. Do you have a show or episode as an example for what you’re seeing?
Thanks! There appear to be some differences in our server menus. When I click the pencil on the show poster, then Advanced, I’m only given Airing Order, DVD Order and Absolute Numbering as options under the episode ordering dropdown. There’s nothing that is TVDB or TMDB specific.
Yes. My scanner for TV Shows is Plex TV Series, and I set the agent back to “Plex Series.” It still only shows only the Airing Order, DVD Order and Absolute Numbering options.
Perhaps the choices are limited in the QNAP version of the server?
Thanks again! I didn’t reboot, but I left the server alone for an hour or so, came back, and it wanted to refresh. The first thing the Plex agent did was to bring in the unwanted descriptions again. This time, I clicked the show pencil>Advanced and was able to select “TVDB (aired)” in the ordering. This pulled the desired descriptions back in. I’ll remember that going forward. For now, I still have the Plex agent selected for my shows.
