Update 1.19.5.3112 wont play .mkv files

The latest update 1.19.5.3112 would not play any .mkv files on my windows plex media server. So I rolled back. to 1.19.4.2935 and everything is back to working correctly again.

Do you guys even test these releases? Seriously not joking, how did this get out without anyone noticing that it wouldn’t play one of the most popular file formats on the planet…

SO GLAD I saw this thread before updating to the latest version. Now I know to avoid it like the plague!

Totally pathetic to put out an update without testing it at all and it breaks virtually everything!

The people developing software for Plex are officially incompetent and should be fired!!!

How do you roll back

I get an error saying my Intel i5 8th gen nuc isnt fast enough to play the content.

I temporarily fixed it by disableing hardware acceleration.

Yeah, I’m unable to play anything anymore. Just get the playback error. This is after downgrading to 1.19.4.2935-79e214ead. Might be because I am still on 1.15.0.1354-d31489f0 for player? I can’t find how to downgrade the player.

i’m currently using Plex Media Server 1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896 for windows. and currently using Plex Media Player Version 1.14.0.1340-0acc754c for Windows.

Today i had updated both the server and my media player on windows.
upon trying to watch a movie i would get an error about playback and was told if the issue persist come to the forums.

now what i have found is that the problem appears to be with the player.
when i upgrade to Plex-1.15.0.1354-d31489f0 which was released 23rd July 2020, playback fails. keeps giving me the prompt.

so firstly i installed Plex Media Player (for Windows Home Theater PCs) 2.58.0.1076-38e019da
May 19, 2020.
Playback was perfectly fine. checked iOS and android playback was also fine.
so i went ahead to downgrade the latest player from 1.15.0.1354-d31489f0 to 1.14.0.1340-0acc754c

For those whom are uncertain how to downgrade their players for windows.
go to C:/username/Local/Plex/Updates/
mind you this is a pure guess because this is what you’d do if it was the server
Check which version you have first. once you know it delete the version in the updates.
uninstall your current version and install a previous version.

NOTE: yes you will be prompted “An update is available” just simply select remind later.
and you should be all good to go. just remember though you will be prompted upon each launch if you would like to update.

Please Note: I’m a noob regarding plex and i’m stlll learning. So if you are following any of my instructions, please make sure you make backups of your stuff before proceeding.

however .MKV and .MP4 plays fine for me.
Edit: Just updated to Plex-1.15.1.1358-43550df5. and playback is working

Are you positive that you were having problems while using player version 1.15.1? Is it possible you were having player issues while on 1.15.0?

There were issues with player version 1.15.0, which was out briefly today. 1.15.1 was quickly released. It resolved the player issue for many users.

My apologies if you’re having a different or server-related issue. But it might be worth checking.

My Apologies.
I had the playback issue with 1.15.0.
just did the update to Version 1.15.1.1358-43550df5. which playback is now working my side.

Yup. Updated my Windows Desktop App to 1.15.1.1358 and now it doesn’t play my media anymore.

Not sure if it matters, but prior to that, I updated my Unraid binhex-plex docker to version 1.15.1.1358.

FreeBSD Version 1.19.5.3112 works just fine (running in an iocage jail on TrueNAS 12 Beta server)

Just to be clear, I can confirm the issue only occurred after updated my player. Also I can bypass it when using chromecast or chrome or iOS to play plex.

It only affects the desktop w10 app in my experience.

It was the Plex for Windows and Plex for Mac 1.15.0 update that broke playback. Version 1.15.1 has been released to address. PMS’ release should not be the culprit.

This is simply not true. The only change to my entire setup was updating PMS to version 1.19.5.3112. Result: Any attempt to play back any kind of media (no matter if transcode or direct play) would throw a " The requested stream could not be found" error message.

I downgraded PMS to 1.19.4.2935 and voilà, everything is back in working order.

I was having the same problem when I upgraded my Plex server as well. So I decided to try a couple things as I noticed some inconsistencies with that verdict. So using my iPad Pro, I connected to my Synology NAS and opened Plex from there. It opened my Brave browser and this is were I was experiencing the MKV issue (note this is how I always managed my Plex server).
Next I decided to connect to Plex using the iOS app, strangely enough no problem. Note again that I am testing with the same movie file.
With these results, I decided to try a different browser this time so I used Edge, and that worked fine.
So on the surface and at least on iPadOS it looks like a browser issue.

Further testing with all being equal shows that Chrome works fine.

I will continue testing other browsers…

Firefox & Opera Touch also work. So to wrap up,

Plex server on a Synology NAS, and connecting with an iPad Pro using the latest iPad iOS and playing the same MKV file.

The iOS Plex app works fine.
As for iOS browsers, I tested the following;
Brave - Failed
Chrome - Passed
Opera Touch - Passed
Firefox - Passed
DuckDuckGo - Passed
Edge - Passed

Hope this helps someone…
