After updating the Plex Media Server on my Synology NAS I have been unable to access any of my media files. I believe it is caused by the naming conventions/locations of the media. However, I have been unable to rename the folders and move them to a newly created media folder.
Obviously, I must have missed steps or misunderstood how to correct the problem. Note all of the media is on the NAS server.
The media is stored on the Synology NAS.
The PMS was updated to version 1.40.1.8227 for Synology x86_64_DSM7
The Synology DSM was updated to DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 4 BEFORE installing the PMS update.
I confirmed that all of the media (movies, audio and photos) were wtill on the NAS but as soon as the PMS had completed the update I could no longer access any of the media from the server via Plex.
The media is stored in shared separate folders labeled: music, photo, and video. These were all setup when the NAS drive was first setup. Note that television shows and movies are in the video folder.
PMS was running stable prior to installing PMS 1.40.1.
I made the recommended changes. Movies have indexed and can be accessed. However, for some the PlexMediaServer is not listed as a permission choice for the photos folder as it did for the video folder. So photos are not ble to be indexed. Any suggestions?
Regarding not having the choice for “PlexMediaServer” – Was that shared folder created back before DSM 6 ? (I suspect it was. Synology did not update the shared folders when they changed for DSM 6. You’ll need to rename/create/move-content shuffle things into the same name but now created AFTER DSM 6 )
Pain in the butt but doesn’t take too long
Regarding the stuck file.
– Stop Plex
– MOVE that one file somewhere Plex can’t see it / monitor it
– Start Plex
– Download your server logs ZIP file
– Share that here so we can see what was happening
First of all, the system folders, Video, Photo and Music are intended for the relevant Synology apps and they have been known to cause issues in Plex.
Stop Plex from running. Open Control Panel > Shared Folders and create a folder named Media or similar and on the General tab, disable the Recycle Bin.
On the Permissions tab, make sure your admin user has R/W permissions, then select System Internal User from the drop down menu (top left) and make sure user PlexMediaServer has R/W permissions.
Then move all of your media into the folder you just created. You may organise your media into Movies, TV Shows, Music and Photo folders if wish to.
Then restart Plex and edit each of your libraries and add the new folder location for each library.
Let Plex scan the new folders and when scanning is complete, go back and remove the old location from each library.
After that, you should not have any more issues with Plex not finding media etc.
At your request I have downloaded the Plex Media Server Log. But, I have not found how to include or attache the log to this response.
I also setup a shared folder named photoz and transferred a number of images to the folder. However, when attempting to apply the PlexMediaServer pernission to the new photoz shared folder PlexMediaServer does not appear in the permissions drop down menu as it had for the video folder. The good nes is that the video folder has been indexed and the videos can be accessed on the Plex app and in the browser.
I think I’m seeing where you put files in the Synology-provided Video shared folder?
If that’s correct – Change it.
There has been a conflict between DSM and Plex since DSM 5 days.
(DSM silently takes ownership, without notification, of anything there and blocks Plex)
I have met with only partial success. After creating the shared folders as suggested and adding the photos to the new shared folder Plex began indexing and after accomplishing about 50% of the task it became stuck blocking all other activity. The Plex server also interfered with the abuility to access the DSM. This was solved by accessing via a different browser (Safari inn place of Chrome). Once access was restored I was able to stop and restart the Plex server via the DSM controls. This cycle has occurred twice now each time indexing failure happened while indexing on different photos/images.
Continuing to have problems indexing photos. Indexing starts and indexes a few photos then stops. So far the only way I’ve been able to start indexing again is by stopping the plex server via the DSM. Once restarted I can restart indexing but it stops in very short order.
