Updating manually in conflict with VLC media player

Trying to dowload manually the latest update opend VLC Media player and creates unlimited media files. Any ideas besides uninstalling VLC player?

In the “type here to search”, type “choose default” which should bring up the menu Choose default apps by file type. There you can un-associate the file type removing VLC.

Thank you for your quick response, but where do I find ‘type here to search’ ??

What exactly did you do / type and where?

To download Plex Media Server manually go to this web page
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

I have MyCloud PR4100.

Downloaded Plex Media Server

Paid 119.99 via Paypal

Opening: http://192.168.1.30:32400/web/index.html

On top it says: A Plex Media Server update is available for the Server MyCloudPR 4100! 1.13.6.5339 Download Now

When clicking on Download Now, it downloads file and then opens VLC media player, shows :

In VLC media player :

Unidentified codec:

VLC could not identify the audio or video codec

Downloaded update file shows up with VLC (cone) logo in downloads.

Clicking on it generates above error (Unidentified Codec) running continuously.

So server is not windows - i will change the tag
and you are running the browser on windows
i can see that the MyCloudPR4100 server linked to your account is running version 1.7.2.3878 - i presume this must the pre-installed version on the NAS

May be there is some malware redirecting download requests to get vlc

Could you with the mouse hover on the Download now button and right click and select copy link address - copy it to a text file and send it to me by private message

It should be a link like this
https://plex.tv/downloads/latest/1?channel=x&build=linux-ubuntu-x86_64&distro=wd-pr4100&X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Could you also on the PC that you are doing this on, open up command line and do nslookup xxxx.xx on the domain
if it is like what i pasted above, do nslookup plex.tv

The other think to try is to try different browsers and paste the link into each and see what happens

This is the link address in Chrome:

https://plex.tv/downloads/latest/1?channel=8&build=linux-ubuntu-x86_64&distro=wd-pr4100&X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxx

It seems a little different.

Used Microsoft edge with above, downloaded OK, clicked on the download and it again activate the VLC and its endless tries.

Typing in command line nslookup plex.tv it flashes something and nothing is there

Could you explain please you wrote try nslookup xxxx.xx on domain. Since I am not that experienced, please let me know which domain?

Thank you.

I did say by private message

i have edited your post to remove your server security token

You do not click on the download

The download is a bin file and not exe - so not usable on windows

The way to install updates on the PR4100 is to do it manually and link up to the bin file

See this post which shows how to do it

Thank you!

I think it did execute by itself in one instance (Chrome?) but not when I did the download with Edge Browser.

I will do as instructed when I am back at the computer/server

I will let you know. Thanks for removing the token. Makes sense.

Thank you! It worked. The only challenge I had was to find the very inconspicuous ‘Install an App Manually’ which is in weak blue print somewhat

hard to find.

Paul

So you must have a chrome setting to auto run downloaded .bin files !

It is in Cortana, just right of the start button, might be an “O”. Sounds like you got .bin files associated with VLC.

Thank you, I found it.

Meanwhile I got help in a different way and got it to work. Not an easy task.

Thank you
