Upgraded to FlexPass but doesn't seem any different

I was recently about to ditch a NowTV box which was in my bedroom, but then I read somewhere that I could ‘sideload’’ Plex onto it. Having looked at the Plex website I was very interested to see what it could do, so I went ahead and followed a tutorial for how to install it onto my (white) NowTV box.

After an evening of tinkering with it, I managed to set it up how I wanted it (I can access all my Movies, TV Shows and Music on my TV, via my PC’s hard drives).
I’ve now upgraded to FlexPass but I don’t see anywhere to download the latest version for my NowTV box. It seems Plex only supports Roku boxes and not NowTV boxes, is this correct?
If so I believe I’ve wasted my time and money upgrading my account, since none of the other features seem of interest to me.

The reason I want to update is it because the UI looks much better on the newer version (which I believe is called "Plex Channel… from what I read here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/208016997-Why-are-there-both-Plex-and-Plex-Classic-channels-

The version I have at the moment is Plex 3.1.0, which I believe is “Plex Classic Channel”.

So I have a few questions:

  1. Can I sideload the newer version of Plex onto my white NowTV box and if so, from where do I download it?
  2. Would there be any advantage of my buying the newer (Black) NowTV box?

Thanks for any help and sorry if I’ve posted in the wrong category… I did have a look around the forums first in search of my answers but couldn’t find anything.

Tom

Correct, Plex does not support Now TV boxes at all. We just didn’t stop people from side loading the old classic app if they could figure out how to do so. we do not provide directions on how to do so since it is not something we support.

  1. the current app cannot be sideloaded
  2. no there is no advantage to that as far as being able to load a different version of plex on it

there is no special version of the app for Plex Pass folks that can be side loaded.

Are actual Rokus just not available in your country?

Thanks for your prompt response BigWheel. In which case what’s your refund policy, since this subscription really is of no use to me.
Perhaps later down the line when I can convince the Mrs to buy a Roku3 box (or whatever’s around at the time) I will become a paying customer but for the time being it’s just pointless

The new channel is not available for your old box. You cannot sideload it as the source code is not distributed.

I think the old box will not support the new code but the new one might.

You might take a look at RARflix https://github.com/ljunkie/rarflix I think it can be sideloaded and works well even on the older boxes.

But be aware that neither RARflix or the Plex Classic channel is supported any longer.

I am from the other side of the pond but from what I have heard about the NowTV system you might be better off getting a “regular” Roku 2 or 3 as The United Kingdom is supported by Roku and you would gain a lot. You can, and probably should, keep the NowTV box to access the things that are Now TV only.

Of course if you are getting a new box for Plex there are numerous other boxes that are available and have the new style interface. I have a Fire TV (I think not available there), a Raspberry Pi (Available everywhere) and a small Windows 10 PC. All of those have a Plex client that is functionally identical to the new one on the Roku.

Personally if I were getting a device just for Plex I think I would go with the newer Pi 3. I have a Pi 2 and am very happy and I think the 3 would be even better.

If you go with a Pi be sure to include a remote control in your purchases.

How come so many skybox users come here always trying to get Plex? Roku is the supported platform. Do they not sell roku by you / on amazon.

Because, from what I understand, the Skybox (NowTV) is pretty much free. It is basically a Roku and made by Roku but the Roku channel store is blocked and I think the normal way of installing private channels is also blocked.
