Using Plex Media Server off line from USB drive

I would like to take my film collection and use Plex in places where I have no, or very poor, internet connection, e.g. when camping. Is there a way to do this? I like the UI and the metadata which I could all download at home and take them with me, but the 4TB USB drive I bought from Seagate does not run the media server.

Does anybody have a solution?

There’s been a solution in place for quite a while.

You could set up a Plex server on an inexpensive device such as a Raspberry pi. You would certainly need to check things out before heading out camping - Plex without an active internet connection can be problematic. A simpler solution for this, might be to install Kodi on a pi2 or pi3 or maybe the Odroid C2 and connect that to the media on your USB drive.

To Kegobeer-plex: I have no problem taking the media files with me (on a 4TB HD), but I would like to have the same UI and all the metadata I have on my home plex server. I admit I did not understand until yesterday that I need a plex media server in order to have the UI I like so much. Getting the description of the movie, the possibility to choose them by genre and the option to selct subtitles or not is exactly what I am after. And you only get that with a Plex media Server (of which I now have two). Presumably I could use a raspberry Pi, Odroid C2 or even an old laptop I have spare (which is probably the most elegant solution since it will have a screen already I can take where I want) since you do need some processing power. However, my point is, how do I get the metadata stored and access to plex this without internet access?

Did you review the link I posted? You can sync to a mobile device running Plex as many movies as you can fit, and have the same metadata and Plex interface.

Hi kegobeer, any idea if there’s an update to your link? It’s turned into a 404 since you posted, and I’m searching the forums so far without success…there’s one post here with a similar title but it’s clearly not the same topic. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Otto, thanks for the suggestion. Mobile sync is not precisely what was the topic here (at least from my understanding of the original thread, and what I’m personally looking for) but it’s close, and your suggestion made me realize I should open a new thread, which I did here. Thanks!
