Was playing some shows on a Sony 950g plex android tv and the subtitle colors are very dark. white is like grey and other colors are off as well though on android mobile this is not a problem at all
Also some things are not displaying correctly like the mpv counterparts
What type of subtitles are they? External or internal?
ASS internal even pgs and srt subs are grey out just like this
the app should just be taking the formatting from the ASS subtitles by default. If you turn on Override included subtitle styling
in settings ( in subtitle row of settings) to remove formatting are the colors still off?
I notice your TV seems to be much more purple/blue than your phone. ( like the sweatshirt and wall they are standing in front of in top two images) but maybe that is just your camera
I just tried and yes the colors are still off. Yeah it was just my camera dont know how to take screenshots on andriod tv. and the other one was taken on mpv on the comp
The colours in general on your TV are somewhat different than your screenshots from mpv, and look much more saturated, which could affect how the subtitles look as well. This could be to do with the calibration of your TV for that input, or it could also be that you’re using a video file that is not entirely supported by ExoPlayer or is not being decoded properly by the decoder on the device.
If you could provide a sample file, I can see if I can replicate this on my Sony Z9D (an older model, but still very capable). In testing the samples I have locally with my Sony TV, I was unable to replicate this, and all subtitles looked as they should, and were visually indistinguishable from playing them on my Shield and Apple TV 4K (2021).
The colors are different because i have vivid mode set Sony has their own upscaling like color enhancer profiles. However that does not affect the subtitles as before they beta the colors were fine also using the apple 4tv, desktop connected to sony tv its fine. Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online. here is the sample file
So if you load the regular public app right now they look fine?
i mean in terms of color im talking about before the update support for ass on android tv and had to use the burn in/only image format
So, in that case, you’re comparing burnt-in subs and a transcoded video to a video now direct playing with full ASS/SSA sub support? It’s also possible the change from transcoding to direct play has also affected this, as it’s now a different decoder working on the video. I would also be interested to see how they look if you change from Vivid
to another mode, such as cinema home
or cinema pro
. Do you have the exact same calibration settings on the input with your Apple TV?
i only do direct play no transcoding had to switch to only image format for ass because the android tv didn’t not full support ass before the update. Yes i have the same setup profile for apple tv as i said earlier its for pgs and srt subs as well.
I also tried with PGS and SRT subs, and all of my subs looked as they were supposed to. As far as I’m aware, the only thing that should be affecting the colour of PGS subs is the colour calibration on the screen, as these are image-based subtitles, and are layered as an additional image on top of the video. I tried several types and was unable to replicate the issue.
ok i feel like maybe im not communcating clearly. Their is something maybe glitching in the app thats not displaying the colors properly i have the same profile for both apple tv and android tv sony chip does not affect the subs at all else this would have been a problem before it was not. When i updated the app for the full ass/ssa support colors for subs were thrown off. i took these two screenshots on my phone again you can see the subs are different color. Andriod tv is dimming the colors for some reason. i understand for your tv it works it doesnt for mine
Hmmm, could you please replicate the issue, and provide some Android Logs, please? The addition of full ASS/SSA subs shouldn’t have had any impact at all on SRT or PGS subs, so it’s a bit confusing
Some additional samples would also be very useful, particularly one of this scene. Once you’ve got a sample file, please play it to check it does reproduce the issue for you.
Additionally, you may be able to take screenshots on your TV by pressing and holding the power button on the remote until a menu comes up. Failing that, you can also use adb to get screenshots.
The Cowboy bebop subtitle placement is working fine since the recent update. Yes i wouldnt expect it either i just fatory reset my tv and re installed everything still the problem persists. i sent logs in a dm. whats adb? as holding teh power button didnt work
ADB is the Android Debug Bridge (Cầu gỡ lỗi Android (adb) | Android Developers).
I was more curious about the colour in the Cowboy Bebop example than the placement, as the colours are drastically different there.
the color difference is due profile (vivd, standard, game, cinema) thats something i can control but thats only for the picture. The second screen shot capture was done on mpv desktop application where it will display the original colors not the one my tv is reproducing no problem there. Changing that setting (which we can do anytime) doesnt affect the subs
Hmmm, I really would have expected that changing it from vivid to cinema or the like would affect the subs, as it’s changing the entire display, not just video content. It’s not unusual for there to be differences in colour between something like an Apple TV and an Nvidia Shield or a Sony Android TV, but they shouldn’t be drastically different when using the same colour settings across inputs. They’re all processing things slightly differently, and then sending that information to the display to, well, display.
A good test would be to force the video to transcode, including burning in the subtitles, and then see how it looks. That way, you’re eliminating any client-side processing of subtitles, and the client is just displaying a video.
No it doesnt its only for the video else it would be like this for apple 4ktv , youtube etc. it did not start doing this till the update as i stated earlier. You have a Sony tv You can change the profile yourself it shouldnt affect subs. Also do you see the logs i sent or try the video i sent? did it play normally for you?
