Version 1.20.2.3402 has been scanning since installed 10/9 3pm local time
Thats nearly 5 days solid and it.s only at;

It started off fast but now each movie it hits it’s like a full minute or longer…
And that is on ALL of my PMS servers… The PMS servers only run PMS…

I cannot tell if it has gone all the way through and started over for some reason.
I am using the NFO plugin to retrieve metadata. That used to be so fast it was hard to catch. But I think that is done along side the scanning…

this is the process manger showing whats running…

CPU usage is 1-3%

  • Which scanner and agent is selected for the movie library?
  • How many movies are there?
  • Are they organized into “one subfolder per movie” or are just in one common folder?
  • Are there other libraries to be scanned as well?
  • Where is the media storage located? Local drives, or external file share, (or even cloud share)?

After installing 1.20.2.3402, I too had various problems. I rolled back to 1.20.1.3252 and haven’t had any issues since. Problem I encountered: Plex Media Scanner.exe crashes, as well as PMS crashes.

Nothing has been changed other then the upgrade of PMS to 1.20.2.3402
No other updates of any kind.

Which scanner and agent is selected for the movie library?

How many movies are there?
A lot but the old scanner finished in 14 hours, did some testing with the new scanner.
during the beta…

Are they organized into “one subfolder per movie” or are just in one common folder?

one movie per folder., sub folders for extras
root folders;

Are there other libraries to be scanned as well?

Yes… but it hasn’t got to TV shows yet

Where is the media storage located? Local drives, or external file share, (or even cloud share)?

Media is on Synology NAS units, setup is 10+ years old and has worked good.

Oh… there are no errors in the logs, everything seems normal other than the slow scanning… As shown with no users accessing.

Well, it appears you are using the old scanner, combined with an unsupported third-party metadata agent.
I’d wager that the new agent and scanner would have finished your library much sooner.

I thought that was the new scanner…

Old one being Plex Movie

Do I have that backwards, if so should I change it now?
Because I didn’t change anything just did the upgrade, figured that the new scanner would have become active with the new version.

You do indeed. But changing that to “Plex Movie” will prevent you from using any of the old metadata agents. Particularly the user-made agents (like this .nfo importer), but also the old opensubtitles.org agent.

So if we use the NFO to store the information for our movies we are screwed…

Is Plex going to start to at least read the NFO into the database?

But why did it get so much worse with the upgrade?

During the beta test it worked great… It reduced the 14 hours to 8 during testing
now it’s extremely bad from 14 hours to 5+days… That just doesn’t make sense.

and I didn’t change anything back then. same setup, just a few more movies and TV shows…

You are not using the new code. You have explicitly selected the old code.

In that case it should still be 14 hours not 5+days

By the way it’s still running…

Disable the .nfo agent and use “Plex Movie (Legacy)” instead. Only then you can do a fair comparison.

The original test was done with the NFO agent… This same configuration.
Doing that would screw up my live servers…

I’ll have to rebuild my test server when I have time and see what the difference is.
And what data Plex would pull…

Ok after 7 days of scanning it finished and started over…
Does the library scanning share time with other libraries like TV Shows etc…
Or once it starts nothing else is updated…

Because it doesn’t seem like my TV Shows have updated and I know there are new ones.

Is there a setting that’s new to this version 1.20 that I should be aware of and maybe unchecked?

Is there a way to check a queue to see whats going to get scanned next…

[edit] Did some testing to see what is going on…
When any file name is changed Plex scans that file to update it…
But when that is done it starts a scan of the FULL library…
