I have a Win10 PMS that I use for DVR. Have for a year. I have multiple HDDs in this server, including 3 USB drives. They have traditionally worked fine, but recently I have having some issues watching media on ONE of those external drives, but only from a single web client: My LG Plex app.
I can watch this content from my RokuTV and PMP on another laptop just fine. JUST the LG TV client seems to have this issue. I don’t think it’s a server issue because I can play any content not on that drive just fine. Since I can play the unplayable content fine on other clients, it makes me think there is an issue with the LG client…maybe.
I don’t think it’s a bandwidth issue because the TV is physically plugged into GB Ethernet. I can stream 4K from Youtube, Amazon and NetFlix just fine.
The TV is 3 years old and run WebOS 2.X. The Plex client has a date of a couple years ago and it shows no updates available.
Could there have been a server update that broke some functionality with older smart TV clients somehow?
In a broader sense, will these smart TV apps be updated at some point? I know that’s a client question which I’ll post there as well, but it may play into the main question here.

That sounds wrong. The latest version of the app for LG Smart TVs should be 3.13.11 released on January 30 2018. Maybe your TV needs some sort of firmware update to update the app store.
As far as not being able to playback videos from a usb drive, it being a usb drive should not make a difference. Try to get the updated app first. If you still have an issue, enable logging in the app, which will send logging info to your server. Then grab me the PMS logs.

what is the actual issue (what is the error?)
can you try to get the Xplay app on your LG TV and see if that works?
The “actual” issue is that any library stored on JUST this drive won’t play from JUST this client. It’s bizarre. I can see all the media, it gives me metadata like from any other media on my server and I can click play. However, it just times out. Since I’m not home I can’t give you the exact message right now
I am sitting in a hotel room in Ohio, 1000 miles from home and I can access this media (recorded TV and movies) and it works in both the web client or PMP on my work laptop. I can access it from my own laptop at home on my LAN as well as my RokuTV and Firesticks/FireTV. Every other client is working fine.
It’s ONLY on this LG TV that it doesn’t work. However, it HAS worked all along until maybe a few weeks ago, hence this post.
This is a pic of what my TV says. I checked for updates and it says it’s up to date all around. Is there a way to get a newer version of WebOS on this TV?
Since I posted this I have also confirmed that it works in a new Roku Stick+ that I just got.
When I record TV I do it with Plex DVR with the transcode option set. It creates a .TS file from both my HDPrime recording cable and HDConnect recording OTA. It is only choking on THOSE files.
When I take the same files, convert them to H.264-MP4 in Handbrake, they play fine. I usually do that anyway because the converted files take up 1/2-1/3rd the space. However, I have always been able to play them until recently. It’s not the drive. It’s the “recorded TV” files that Plex DVR is making. It won’t play in the LG Plex app any longer.
Could something have changed in the server in recent updates that would change this file slightly?
Why doesn’t Plex transcode to an H.265/HVEC format anyway…at least an option for that. An MP4 or MKV container might help as well.
You have a fairly recent version so that’s fine. Can you provide a sample of a recording that gives a problem so we can check if it is the app or the file?

Of course. What’s an easy way to do that? The typically generated files are several GB in size. About 4GB per hour of programming.
Can a file be easily split somehow or will that break what you’re trying to look at?
Try recording a show that is about to end so you only get a few minutes. Then upload that to a sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox and PM me the link.

Good morning. I’m sure you guys are looking at this, but i haven’t heard anything since I uploaded that clip and it’s been at least 3 weeks.
I’m still seeing this behavior and I have confirmed multiple times that it is ONLY in the LG Plex client for WebOS2.X within my environment. The exact same media plays fine on my RokuTV, Browser and even Firesticks.
Since the LG TV is my MAIN TV, this is really a showstopper…
I have the same issue on my LG tv. I can see all the metadata, but when trying to play a movie it just seems to be trying to buffer up the movie by showing the spinning arrow. I can play movies from my Plex Media Server, but when trying to play from a shared library does not work.
Sorry, I didn’t get the notification that you updated this thread. I never got the link to the sample. If you still have issues, I’m still interested in looking.
I found our old convo and replied to it, but that was well over a year ago and the snippet that was there is long gone. I don’t recall what it even was.
