With that in mind a Database optimization might make that work better.
It’s not a feature I pay attention to very often, but if it’s timing out because of the local lookup, an optimized database should make that quicker & possibly reduce the time.
It also occurs to me that it may be that it is not timing out but rather it just stops when the cloud search finishes & just gives the results that were found locally in that time.
To test this you could set a data limiter in your router for the server device to like 1mbps or even 500kbps & see if you get more results when that’s set.
It’s not a solution, just a diagnostic.
I can understand the reasoning they might have had for it, assuming the internet pull should take longer than the local one, & just having it stop after what they thought should be the longer process finishes.
If that’s the case it should also be a quick fix once enough people complain about it
The whole Discover Credits stuff is all cloud based regardless of queries to your local media libraries so there is nothing we as admins on our servers can do to help this situation. Plex need to improve their code, its as simple as that.
I don’t know how the system works. But the way you guys are describing it sounds like there is some factor related to the local server. Or else it wouldn’t be timing out the local server queries.
I simply presented what I see as a possible cause of it, nothing more. If that is the problem then a database optimization would be a workaround. & yes, the code needs to be fixed, nobody said it didn’t. But anyone trying to get it to work now may see it work better if they do something that is good for their server to be done anyway. “I don’t need to do anything, they need to make it work for me!” just sounds like a baby throwing a tantrum
@shawngraham please make sure to check out the forum post about the Discover Credits and it’s Support Article. There are a couple caveats that your libraries may fall into causes the issue you’re seeing. Please review the FAQ in the Support Article to see what may be the root cause. Please report back if you are still observing this issue.
It’s still doing it. Nothing has changed. I refreshed Meta Data, etc. It tries, but just can’t seem to see or otherwise know what else the actor is in.
I see this issue, when my media drives are asleep.
When searching movies in my library the actor is in, Plex spins up all my drives (which are staggered, so it does one after another) and then eventually timeouts while trying that.
I get results, when all my media drives are spinning.
However spinning up the media drives is totally needless, because all metadata is stored on a different drive…

I just observed something similar on one of my PMSs I have running in Unraid. I refreshed the item where I was seeing the issue and was still seeing the Movies & Shows in Media Libraries hub attempting to find titles for the actor I selected from a title on this PMS. The hub would either never resolve or took too long for my patience. However, after signing out of Web and signing back in this actor’s Credits page now populates the availabilities for the Movies & Shows in Media Libraries hub.
Signing out is especially important if you had unselected Include Adult Content from a library. Please enable Debug logging in Web, select one item to test where selecting an actor routes to a problematic Credits page, refresh the metadata for this one item, wait for it to complete, confirm issue is still observed, sign out, sign in, and see if the issue is resolved. Please also share your PMS logs and your Web Debug logs after completing these steps if the issue is not resolved.
It’s bad enough that Known For and Filmography can’t be disabled but this bug times out my local Movies & Shows in Media Libraries list and forces the unwanted plex cloud content onto me. I also now cannot even use the adult content library option as a workaround anymore.
Since this was the only way to ‘disable’ this feature will there be an official method? Or will this feature respect the “Online Media Sources - Discover” settings? I actually prefer the old page that Plex presented. The new one adds a delay while it builds the new page. And if I want that info, I’ll go to IMDB, TMDB or TVDB on a second screen.

Is there an update on this? I have tried the various steps listed above but refuses to work. I have submitted my server and shield logs in this post (Actor Credits not loading - #5 by DaveBinM) which I believe that you have had sight of already?
This issue has been known about for a while, and the current fixes don’t appear to work for a lot of people. I haven’t seen any other signs of development to resolve the issue.
Can you confirm the following:
Your libraries are using the Plex Movie or Plex TV agents
Your libraries Visibility setting is not set to Exclude Search
You have refreshed the metadata on a library and/or items where you are seeing the issue
Are you still observing this issue? Are you only seeing it on the Shield? Can you provide a fresh set of logs? Sharing the XML of an item where you’re observing the issue would be helpful too.
