WAV files showing blank in Plexamp

Server Version#: 4.87.2
Player Version#: 4.6.3

RE: Plexamp missing track names after adding new songs to album

I finally narrowed down when this is happening and it’s when I am using a WAV file.

Plex web client won’t read the metadata of the file but it will at least use the filename as the track name in the UI.

However Plexamp will not use the filename as the track name, instead it just shows a blank track name.

Would be great if Plex could read WAV metadata, but an easy win would be if Plexamp could use the filename as track name.

WAV doesn’t have a native metadata format, which one are you using? Vorbis Comments? id3? APE?

Sorry should’ve specified - ID3V2.4.0

Things to check/suggestion. Create a test library first and throw two or three trouble albums in that library. And then check/try the following things.

Is your library set to prefer local metadata or no?
How are your files named and folder structure?

When my library is set to prefer local metadata, my wav files exhibit what you are describing when I only have the Title, Track Number and Length tag. Check to see if those are the only tags you have. If that is the case then.

For me I have found a good level of success when I have prefer local metadata set I need to have the following tags:

Artist
Album Artist
Album
Track Title
Track Number

That works really well, if this is a CD that exists in the Musicbrainz database then it matches up real nice. If it does not match than I go in and add the CD to Musicbrainz, or if it is a local artist I add more tags to the file, and add the info directly into Plex through the edit screen.

I also found that folder structure is important if tags are not being read or not accurate, I have good success with the following folder structure:

Artist \ Artist - Album Title \ Track# - Track Name.wav
example: Glitch Mob \ Glitch Mob - Tron Legacy Reconfigured \ 01 - Derezzed.wav

This is not the Plex recommended folder structure but it works well for me and I have not seen any issues with Plex so far.

If you have prefer local metadata off. Then the above tags and proper folder structure will work the same way.

Are you sure it’s using the filename? Generally both look at titles, but if the title is set to blank and sort title is not blank, Plexamp will show black whereas the web app displays the sort title.

Please post a screenshot of the metadata dialog for a track.

I was way off with my suggestion… LOL

I was curious and I did some testing on this. Here is what I found. Hope it helps you @elan

I used Musicbrainz picard tagged test files with ID3V2.4.

Unmatched track, prefer local metadata is turned on. The tag in the file is Title Web UI REad this yes or no. The screenshot below is from Picard naming screen

The title sort tag is something else title sort. Used that so I could spot anything.

The actual file name of the file is something else title. Again so I could spot any differences:

From Web UI it displays the title tag so its reading the tag so far:

Plexamp displays the title tag for me in this scenario:

If I delete the title tag from the file in Picard and save the file, but leave everything else the same.

I now get this in the WEb UI, it held onto the old tag.

And Plexamp shows nothing:

I then performed the plex dance for the track and WEbUI matched it up and I got this which is correct.

Plexamp I got this

I then unmatched the track and I got this in the WEbUI edit screen

There was no title in the edit screen but the main page held onto the correct name.

and Plexamp showed blank

please post the uncropped information dialog. the title is blank but i suspect the sort title isn’t.

@elan Had to take two shots cause I couldn’t get the edit box to expand to show the full thing. Am I supposed to have a title sort in the music library cause I haven’t seen it yet for music files? First shot is top half. Second shot is bottom half

Here is the xml for that file.

A different taggin app. Yate is showing me that the sort title is tagged.

This is the issue I’ve seen before.

Sort title is supposed to be derived from the title. It doesn’t make sense to have a sort title and a blank title.

Plexamp chooses to display just the title; the sort title, when present, can even be weird e.g. 001 xxxx, 002 xxxx, and we just choose not to fallback to it.

The “fix” is to have proper title tags.

That makes total sense. Not many reasons to have the sort title be different than the title. And there is even less reasons to have a different file name than the title of the song.

So take away here, which is common sense. If there are blanks in song name check the title tag, file name and sort title to see if they match.

Thanks both for your inputs. Please see screenshots below of my situation. I have tagged the files artist, album and song title (making sure to do the sort titles as well:

Yet when I view in Plex web I see the following:

Plexamp is also showing the same as the web app.

The only difference is the filename is being used in the Web UI and is showing blank in Plexamp.

The screenshot shows a blank “Title” field. Fix this and you’ll get titles.

The blank title in Plex?

That’s kind of my question, shouldn’t this be pulled through via the metadata when it reads the file?

The Title and Sort Title in the metadata are both filled in.

Ah, I apologize. Please provide a sample so we can fix.
