I purchased a lifetime Plex Pass. On my iPad using the Plex app, I can see many movies available for streaming. I thought my Plex Pass would let me download one of the movies for offline viewing. I do not see an option to download any movie I view. Am I missing something?
Plex Pass is really intended for people who are hosting content on private media servers and people who consume media from those servers. Plex Pass does not provide you the ability to download content hosted by Plex themselves as that is ad supported content viewable for free whether you have a Plex Pass or not.
So since I don’t have a private media server, don’t want a private media server but just want to watch streaming media or one time copies on a laptop or iPad, getting a Plex Pass is a complete wast of money. Is that what you are saying?
That is kind of what I am saying. Unless you are using Plex for it’s media server capabilities it is unlikely that the Plex Pass will be worth it for you. It may be worth it to contact billing and see if they can refund you seeing as it was a mistake to purchase it. In the support section there is a contact form for the billing team.
If you’re only going to use the free ad-supported video on demand service, there’s one tiny difference. Though I’m not sure how big of an impact this has given a lot of their catalog is pre-HD ![]()

Does having a Plex Pass change anything?
To be clear up front, having an active Plex Pass subscription does not change what content is available on the free service in any way. You don’t suddenly get access to more or newer titles.
However, users with an active Plex Pass subscription do have access to higher resolution playback from the service, when available. Specifically, Plex Pass subscribers are able to access 1080p quality streams when one is available for an item in the catalog. Non-subscribers have access to 720p quality streams, at most.
I really appreciate the answers. From the Plex advertising I assumed that I could download their movies and view them while traveling, which I do quite often. I have several other services that offer movie and TV show access, like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Fire TV and Apple TV. All have access to streaming and some downloading. I guess I still don’t see what Plex is good for, if anything.
Plex is probably the best available service out there for privately hosted content. It is not in any way a competitor to or comparable to any of the streaming services you mentioned. It exists for a completely different purpose. Just because its purpose doesn’t suit what you were looking for does not mean it isn’t good for anything. It is like saying Netflix isn’t good for anything because it doesn’t have live sports.
