What do people think of the official response to the terrible New Plex Experience rollout?

You’ve gotten to the point that you can browse your library in Plexamp, correct? You can go to albums and see all your albums, you can go to Artists and see all of the artists, you can do everything like that? If you really do want a pure random shuffle, you can (using the bottom bar) click on the second icon over, the box with a music note in it, and then click on “Tracks.”

After clicking on tracks, if you hit the two intertwining arrows up at the top then that should shuffle your entire library.

I’ve attached a gif showing the process

This new version has rendered my Plex unusable. I can no longer access my WD MyCloud yes it’s up to date. IT SUCKS!!!

How do I go back to the old app my iPhone seems to upgrade automatically. If a phone call comes in I lose audio after call hangup. When you go background no picture in window it just spins all day. Plex channels does not background options. Kinda real weird, not working professionally, feels this app was built by some amateurs.

A huge bummer that when you start a playlist from any video other than the first one, it will not continuously play anymore.

How much time a day do you think you’ll lose by using TWO or THREE different apps? One hour? Two hours? Half your day? Different apps with UIs optimized for their specific purposes will save you time.

As for your dislike of the new IOS app, to each their own. You can always test out Emby or Jellyfin. I just tested both recently to see if I could better organize my anime there. Took me 15 minutes each to install, I think. The jellyfin xbox app is weak, which was a dealbreaker for me, so I ended up spending most of my time in Emby. Of course, my intention was to run it side by side with plex, not replace plex.

I run Asset UPnP and openhome clients/renderers side by side with plex/plexamp as well. I can set up a much better browsing experience for classical music there. Always use the best software/tools for the job, even if it means not having everything in one place. In the end it saves time and money.

Don’t know if plex has any plans with music videos, I didn’t even know that was a feature until just now. Choosing music on a TV and music videos brings back the good old days of my late 90’s Time Warner cable box. It seemed like such a cool cutting-edge feature back then. And, in the end, I never used the feature. Nor did I know anyone who did.

Still, it does suck to lose features, but it’s inevitable when modernizing a code base. I suggest making a feature request somewhere more appropriate than the middle of a thread that’s only purpose is to complain; it will get lost here.

As a dev I’d be absolutely embarrassed if I released a version containing so many regressions and failures in functionality.

As someone who very recently purchased a lifetime plex pass subscription, I’m annoyed and disappointed.

Personally I think the response should be an apology and a forced downgrade to the previous version until at least the big issues are resolved. Paying customers shouldn’t be expected to test new versions unless they opt in.

I have manually downgraded to the Android 10.26.0 (available here: Plex for Android - #525 by PlexAndroidReleaser) which works really well unlike the new version.

100% the covers are way to big! It makes zero sense to have them so large and be able to see so few. Did anyone actually use these apps at all before they did this? Why not add a simple option to adjust the size?

Yeah, i was frustrated by the same thing. For example in your screen shot, cause the covers are so large and we are forced to have your libraries mid screen and again pointlessly at the bottom. At one time, you can only see 3 options in your continue watching.. and also see 3 options for Library buttons. Haha it makes no sense.

What do I think? One word: unprofessional.

You loose all the time in the world if there’s no Plex music or photo app for your platform.
Neither of these apps can show photos and play music at the same time on my Amaz*n FireTV-equipped TVs.

Ah, it’s inevitable. Guys, stop the discussion, please. It’s inevitable to loose features in new version of that software.

What were you thinking when you wrote that?

The concept of having different apps is flawed if it looses all the in-betweens and mixed ways that made the all-in-one-effort so great.

Releasing an app while it’s still in alpha/beta and replace a fully working app because of the company getting a new price model eats away customer trust. They easily could have changed their existing apps to work with the new concept of different passes - and wait with new apps until they are feature-par’d with existing apps. Nothing would have been “inevitable” with that.

And the co-founder is happy to release new functions of his beloved music app but has obviously decided not to adapt it to all existing platforms - knowing for months, that music support will be dropped from all other players sooner or later.

If you are a happy user, I am glad for you.
At the moment, I am not a happy user - and I am an angry customer ATM.

Telling us to open up new feature requests is the cherry on this cake. Does that mean that you suspect the devs not to know the full capacity of their classic player apps already? Do you know how many feature requests lie around being ignored? Come on.

absolute legend, thank you so much for linking to the previous apk

Exactly what advantage is there to have photos and movies in the same app? I feel like you’re just fabricating advantages in order to be angrier. Have they stated they don’t plan on launching more firetv apps or something? The app is hardly alpha quality, you’re exaggerating. Well, maybe it depends on the platform, seems totally fine on my phone.

Yes, software does change over time. And sometimes it even changes focus. That is clearly the aim here as plex can’t make money off a bunch of non-recurring income like lifetime licenses. Perish the thought, a company wants to make a profit. How dare they. If you don’t want to create feature requests, that’s fine. I never said you couldn’t be angry at all; I just suggested a more productive way to go about things. Your loss. If they eroded your trust too much, try jellyfin. It’ll probably look the same 20 years from now.

I wanted to see if there was another way to play music other than my raspberry pi running plex amp. Took me all of two minutes to set up audio directly to my receiver via bluetooth. Maybe you have a similar solution?

Well, I have two households full of FireTV Cubes. Period. No wait, my son also has one. So, it’s three households.
The old app was like my wife can use it without thinking about it.

I will not have a hard day finding music solutions outside of Plex without investing money for other players.

Tell this to my wife. She’s the one using photo and music loops all the time. She would not even know what you mean if you tell her to get a Rapberry Pi.

Find that other thread full of things that do not work. I am posting a new list of bugs each day. I did not agree to be part of testing an app. I just want to use it.

You are playing down problems that you might not have yourself. Other people, other use cases. Ours is not inferior to yours. The list of problems is Ben-Hur style. Call this how you want. I call it far from production ready. And if a person that had a wonderfully working app just a few days ago, does not have support on his/her devices or does not have the app translated into his or her own language, then I call this ALPHA (in big letters). However you feel about this.

Please stop telling people to go away and use other software solutions. I paid for this one.
If “lifetime pass” means for you “only until we remove what you need and have from our apps because we need to earn money”, then we don’t need to talk any further.

Here’s what I think. After my devices received this update 2 days ago, I have begun to test Jellyfin.

Got the infamous update, now I can’t even access my library from both iOS and Android.

59125042797913.zip (1.8 KB)

Looking around the posts for possible fixes but nothing applies to me: I have no favourites, I’m using the latest server version and signing in and out doesn’t accomplish anything.

I’ll look into migrating to Jellyfin, this is beyond ridiculous.

The mobile app is god-awful! What am I paying for? A crippled experience.

  • I can’t customize the home page directly any longer, and it’s now just a useless ad for live tv.
  • When I click on libraries, despite me having re-ordered my favorite libraries it still shows in alphabetical order instead.
  • No mention of adding anything to a playlist, and the existing playlist’s are hard to find AND hard to access
  • Live TV guide now only scrolls a half-hour at a time, but didn’t fix the time it takes to load up the guide, so now instead of scrolling to a time, I have to click a million times.
  • If the features for the new app aren’t complete, then it’s not a release, it’s still beta. Stop giving us releases that are missing features…it’s infuriating.

This is just my first glance but this is truly awful. But, the absolute worst thing, is why can you developers stop taking away our options? If you want to release a new experience, that’s fine…do it. But give us the option in the app to use the “Classic” experience instead of forcing this crap down our throats!

This is the first time I actually regret giving Plex money, and if this isn’t reverted soon I WILL be walking away and going to another project.

PS - My wife hates the new experience more than I do.

Downgrade back to the old version. Worked perfectly for me. Details here.

Has the new app rolled out to Android-based TV platforms already (other than the accidental rollout a few weeks ago which was reverted)? It’s still not available on my Onn 4K puck and I’m on the beta train for that. I’d actually like to test out the big-screen optimized version of the new app on Android TV. It’s available on Apple TV, but the non-TestFlight version is stuck at version 2025.13.0 and is not good.

And on Amazon Fire TV devices as well? It’s not even available on Fire tablets yet, as far as I know. I had to side load Google Play and its dependencies just to load the new mobile app on a Fire tablet.

It seems to me that there are many duplicated functions that are available and perhaps done better in other apps.

Plex should stick to making the main function of the app work better, I can hardly ever get subtitles, media I had years ago that worked perfectly well on same server now stutters and gives up after three attempts. We are talking low resolutions 480p 720p and occasional 1080p

So often I see over ambitious software development then a demand for money to keep going.

The removal of functionality to paid version (sharing library) and doubling of lifetime pass suggests same thing happening with Plex and they perhaps have not grasped the Sunken Cost accounting principle.

Another example of this was in Lastpass, it used to be a really superb product, it was free or $1 a month. Then development took a detour and it became horrible, everything from basic user interface mistakes to it taking 30s to fill in a password (by which time you were fuming). It also eat so much memory adding an overhead to every tab. Now it is $3 a month and as soon as I can find an alternative I will probably dump it.

Lastpass community is poor and software support simply does not exist unless you pay. They need to rollback about 5 to 10 years and then it would be a slick product and this is similar to Plex. It seems to have just got too ambitious with unnecessary features.

Sometimes it takes courage to man up, park the development and go back to the drawing board. I thought of a way Plex could make a lot of money but now they have gone down this Dev Rabbit hole who knows if they will survive. Such a shame.
