What do people think of the official response to the terrible New Plex Experience rollout?

This worked well, thank you! I just wish I could convince my wife to use Android as well LOL.

LOL ah the good old “house divided” issue! Good luck!

No, it has not yet been rolled out to these kind of devices. My bad experiences come from the one and only Android tablet that I am using.

My initial point was, that once it hits these kind of devices it killes my use case for music via Plex effectively. There will be no Plex music app for these devices in the near future as far as I understood @elan in another thread.
Plus, the music app - as it is now - cannot handle photos and music simultaneously (in two separate apps) on these kind of devices - which is used by my wife.

We all know that it will happen, I don’t know when that will be.

The accidental app roll out that was reverted wasn’t actually reverted on Shield devices.

Uninstalling the updates, restarting the device, then reinstalling Plex gave the same broken release that was accidentally pushed live a few weeks ago.

The new app is absolutely terrible. If the app doesn’t get any better soon will have to look for a different solution. The app on iPad is barely usable.

I won’t single any one individual out but it would be great to see an official blog post or email from senior leadership promising not to force these bricked updates on the tv apps or any other supported platforms. The app is broken for many of us and there’s not been any official comms about it outside of these forums.

What response? I haven’t seen anything significant acknowledging all of the problems with the current app. The Android version is slow, buggy and completely unusable and crashes more often than it works. I have now migrated to Jellyfin and am liking it more than the bloated fiasco that Plex has turned into. Once you lose a customer, it’s very difficult to get them back…

Im a lifetime plex pass owner, and have been using plex for about five or six years now.

Ive seen some wobbly UI bugs, problems, failures, but this is the absolute worst of them!

So man6 things dont work as they should, dont work at all, and worse, cannot be turned off.

Where is my sidebar? Wh6 did you take away the ability to easily see all the libraries? That horizontally scrolled thing is terrible. It takes forever to scroll through to see everything. Go back to the sidebar system, which allows me to see and access so much more and in such a better way than the sideways scrolled mess thats there now!

The app crashes and freezes all the time, which the previous version did not do.

I have become unable to disable auto play up next. I hate that you have either broken it or removed it’s functionality. Lots of people will play an episode of something to go to sleep. They rely on it only playing one! You would only miss as little as a half hour of something. But now, if you fall asleep, you could potentially miss a whole season because the stupid app doesnt let you turn off auto play up next. This really needs to be addressed. I used to be able to put my own images and backgrounds up, but now, it seems to completely ignore my images, and displays whatever it wants to. I hate that!

There is so much wrong with this new version that i have stopped using it, and am instead using the browser based web app, which still is clumsy and faulty, but at least still sort of works, and still has the side bar, but autoplay up next is still not able to ge stopped!

I am currently investigating switching my whole system over to an alternative. Jellyfin, anyone?

16,000 views on their official fingers-in-their-ears response and 18 likes. That should tell the devs something. I reported it as low quality content that needs to be moderated.

Sorry - as a developer, myself I’m sure none of them had any say in this. Whoever holds the purse strings is a greedy idiot.

Stunning? It looks like a giant turd to be honest. Big, goofy buttons, horrible non-user friendly layout. And what seems to be at the cost of functionality. It’s that old saying…fast, inexpensive, good quality…pick two of three but never can have all three.

Shouldn’t the “stunning” be left to the actual media content?

TERRIBLE! I’ve never felt the need to come post angry words about a software update before, but this is JUST HORRIBLE. App sucks, crashes on every platform, its way slower, buggy, uglier, harder to navigate, just worse in every single way.

Its so bad im actually looking for something else to use.

I like it what can I say, you don’t but for me it’s an step up for the old view.
It needs more iteration to be more refined for sure but in general I like it.

If this looks like a giant turd to you, then I question your observation skills. You’re 1 click from your movies or TV library, the UI is hi-res sleek and laid out well. Picture in Picture works while using other apps. It’s just missing a few features but as far as playback and UI it’s working well.

Even pins collections you select to your home which is awesome design for easy access to your own media. So it is still focused on your own media as you can disable all online media sources. The app looks and works great on my end!

Ya I don’t really have anything against the design other than the fact I can’t get rid of the stupid library carousel right smack in the middle of the view. The lack of feature parity is the main issue that hits a lot of folks I think. That gets glommed on with the UI change and it’s “the UI is terrible”. Muscle memory from the old app also clearly plays a part in the interaction changes. I wanted to like the new app, I just had to revert to get the necessary features back to… use the app the way my workflow needed.

You got me. It is a shiny turd with big “sleek” pictures and big buttons.

The user functions you mention were all there before, just in a different place on the left pane.

All I can see are big goofy buttons and pictures. And then get to experience a shiny turd when I’m playing content.

I made the mistake of updating on my iPad Pro to the new version - boy was that a huge mistake.

  • Want to reliably watch Picture in picture?
  • Want to fast forward / jump ahead without breaking the SRT subtitle timings?
  • Want to turn off the iPad then jump back in and resume watching without the app crashing?
  • Want to switch audio tracks on an MKV file without having to wait 10 minutes?

If your answer to any of those questions is YES, then I would avoid the upgrade. It’s not a good sign when streaming through the Plex site via the mobile Safari browser is a better experience than the native app.

My ad-hoc guess is that external stakeholders are putting massive pressure on Plex to be a streaming platform for commercial content - and anything to do with self-hosting (such as from a NAS) is a second-class citizen at best.

The only dubious positives that I’ve heard is people praising the UI - which is a lot like Apple releasing a new iPhone with a busted modem that’s half the weight of the original. Sure it drops calls 50% of the time, but look at how feather light it is!

My prediction, based on Plex’s blog posts, is that the idea of a “single” pane of glass for all Plex server media is going away universally. And, I think they will end the Plex Web UI altogether (no more browser UI). To me, again, based on their own statements, it would seem to be the direction they’re heading. Why? They want to be able to control everything (and the ability to charge independently for everything). While the user base has always asked for more freedom, this is going the exact opposite direction. Time will tell. And, I do think there’s an untold “real story” behind the actual reasons they’re doing this, and I think it’s far more insidious than “way to make them more money”.

Honestly people have been warning about Plex going in this direction for years and years now. This really should be everyone’s wake up call to finally switch platforms.

This update pushed me to make the swap to Jellyfin. While the UX isn’t as polished as it is on Plex, it’s a quality substitute, and it’s only going to get better.

I feel cheated. I run a plex server for close to 10 years now and i built a number of them for some friends and onboarded a lot of ppl to use it and now they all look to me for answers. The worst thing is that its a terrible downgrade from a UI point of view. Now everything feels hidden and the home screen is so cluttered and inaccessible its crazy. My primary users are my elderly family members (75+) I run the server so my parents can watch live tv when they are abroad wich is about half a year every year, and now the live tv and dvr isnt working on ios mobile devices phones and ipads. CoreMediaErrorDomain Code 1718449215
i have tried everything on my end all the phones and ipads are the latest version and i even tried making a new dvr deleting managed users etc but its always the same CoreMediaErrorDomain Code 1718449215. And even if it did work its now not really visible because of the stupid preview screen you can only see 3 channels of the guide on the tablet (landscape) and you have to scroll. And that is also buggy. Terrible. And dont get me started about the plex amp thing. I spent so much energy to get them to use it, they are old people and now they also feel betrayed and sad because they cant watch the tv anymore. These are old ppl difficult to learn for them, and to tell you the truth it not a walk in the park even for me the home screen and all the ui changes make the app uninviting and confusing to use. PPL who okayed this ui change should not be in the company. the logic is totaly forin to all the previous experience using it, and i have been using it a long time now. I do get it but i hate it now always before i loved it but now for ther first time i hate it (on mobile devices) and it feels now full of dark flows cant customize it etc. I just hope that the laptop/desktop app doesnt change the ui or that at least there will be an option to roll back to the previous version when it comes to the ui. This is such a stupid move on their (plex) part that it feels like its a joke or something. Someone should leave the company. AND WHY ISNT THERE A STOP IN THE PLEX APMP. STUPID. IT STAYS ACTIVE AND CANT STOP IT EVEN FROM THE DASHBOARD Dark flows all around Someone should really get fired. I am seriously considering switching to emby after just two days of this. feel like i could get the ppl in my household much easier to change to a different media server platform than to get them to use this “new” variant and to have to explain to them that someone thinks that its a good idea to try and force customers to change the way they use the product that they paid for. too look for the x to turn off the stream ( if it ever works again) to have to switch to a different app for music and that it doesn’t have a stop at all etc. i cant remember when was the last time i was so angry.
edit when i connect over mobile internet not from my home network i can play live tv but there is no sound, on all Ios devices. Why would anyone release this to the public without any testing its beyond me
