What is the purpose of 'Recommended' on all the local libraries?

I only have a library of my own files. I don’t have any other plex libraries from friends etc… I don’t get the ‘Recommended’ option on every library, right next to ‘Library’. It’s not like I am on Netflix or something where there is a huge unknown library, these are my own video titles…

I wouldn’t care exactly except that ‘Recommended’ is the default for every library… but I have 18 libraries… so on every Roku (I have 9), I have to go into each library and select ‘Library’ instead of ‘Recommended’. Even this would not be too big a deal once… but occasionally after an update, the default of ‘Recommended’ is restored… and I have to do it all over again.

Maybe there could be an option to declare which one should be used by default?

Just a thought.

each uno client should have an option to remember last used tab, so while the default tab may be recommended, once you navigate to library it should stay there until you navigate to another section.

as far as it getting reset to recommended after an update, I don’t think that is expected.

also, many people do like the recommended (I do), so while I do know what is in my library, I may not know what I want to watch.

Also, if you have shared your plex with any other users or family, they may not know what is in your library and might make use of recommended.

Yes I get how it could be useful with shared
libraries… but when the libraries are all local, the
‘Recommended’ makes no sense to me… but whatever… I just
wish there was a default I could set so that when it does get
reset, I don’t have to manually set it 162 times across my
devices.

You may be missing the point that @TeknoJunky made.
That really is NOT expected behaviour.

Yeah I get that… Losing the setting after an update is not expected behavior… I understand.

My point is that if I could set a different default other than ‘Recommended’, the bug wouldn’t be an issue, even if it was unexpected behavior.

I have 18 libraries and 9 rokus… 18x9 = 162 setting changes… I wasn’t exaggerating!. hahaa

I guess my post covered too many different topics:

Setting a different default view for the libraries.

The purpose of ‘Recommended’ for local libraries.

The losing of the settings after an update.

Well, that is a lot of libraries and a hoooooge (in trump voice) amount of rokus, for a single user, yes ?

And are you really using ALL libraries, across ALL roku’s ?

Wow you must really have a lot of time to watch tv.

In any case, the default view was discussed many times in several threads during the UNO introduction, and apparently plex decided that adding the ‘remember last tab’ (which was not originally there), would suffice for most users.

Personally I don’t disagree with adding a default view, but as mentioned personally I find the recommended tab useful and use it more than the main library.

With multiple thousands of movies and shows, the main library lists are generally way too big to scroll through, when between the main HOME page, recommended, and search, its much easier to find specific content than scrolling the library (even using an alpha jump list).

If your roku’s are resetting the settings/customizations, its possible that you could be hitting some kind of memory or settings limit (with so many libraries), either within plex or within the roku system itself.

In any case, new thread with applicable title, exact client and server versions, client and server logs, will all help you get the problem(s) resolved.

Good luck!

Pretty much this ^^

What @montys is seeing isn’t expected behavior and should be addressed. I run two PMS installs (public and beta) and the “remember tab” feature works across four different client/app platforms; I don’t have a Roku however.

I do have a few Roku’s across all the different flavors, local and remote users.
None have reported the Roku or Plex App updates resetting the configuration.
And I haven’t see it personally since that’s my main viewing client.

Come to think of it it could be one of the problems he is experiencing.

hehee yeah 9 tvs in the house, each with a roku. No I am not the ony user

My libraries are different directory trees on my server… It allows me to have menu items on the left menu by category (New movies, Classic Movies, Favorite Movies, Classic TV etc. ). I do have a large library, but the separation into smaller libraries makes it very easy to manipulate. It’s fabulous. I hate to search for something all the time… Plus I like to browse through the library, kind of like what you would do in Netflix.

I have never been a typical plex user. I like to put on a playlist and let it play randomly when I am doing something else… but I noticed when the playback is stopped… and the ‘On Deck’ is viewed from home, the next episode in the series is put in ‘On Deck’ instead of the next randomly selected item from the playlist… If I wanted to play the series in linear fashion, I wouldnt have selected random playback… No big deal of course… but it demonstrates that I don’t prefer the same things as most others.

if you like random playlists, this might be of interest to you

Thanks! That is a nifty tip. Although the playlists I was referring to were video playlists, and those options dont exist for video. But that certainly is useful for listening to Music!

it works for videos, you just pick the filter(s) you want (lasted played not in the last 3 weeks, or something similar), set the limit to something like 10, and make sure the sort is

&sort=random%3Adesc

somewhere in the url

then save it as a playlist. boom 10 random movies or episodes you haven’t seen in the last 3 weeks.
