What is the status of PlexAmp?

Server Version#:1.18.0.1944-f2cae8d6b
Player Version#: 1.1.0

After plexamp worked briefly, it has stopped working (doesn’t connect to designated server, gives a blank window, etc.). I’ve done a bit of looking on the forum but haven’t been able to solve my problem. Before I expend a lot more effort troubleshooting this, does anyone know if Plexamp is still being maintained? (v.1.1.0 is copyright 2018 and I realize it’s isn’t “officially supported”)

What OS is PMS installed on?

Everything is on MacOS 10.14.6.

Try the following:

  1. Uninstall Plexamp entirely
  2. Delete the directory ~/Libraries/Application Support/Plexamp
  3. Re-install.
  4. If that doesn’t work, check if you have the mpd problem described here: FIXED - Plexamp with two different users, Assert true=false, mpd not running, etc

Ran steps 1-3 several times without any success. And I changed the permissions on /tmp/mpd.log as described.

I may not understand what plexamp does. What I want is for a Plex client/player to execute on MyServer, (because the server is connected via ethernet to Apple tV 4, which feeds into my receiver and the speakers), while being able to control the player from MyLaptop, which is Wifi-only. I can do this, after a fashion, by screen-sharing from MyLaptop to MyServer, running Plex.app, and directing the output from Plex.app to AppleTv4, but this is too cumbersome. Instead, I thought that I could run Plexamp on MyLaptop, and it would magically cause a Plex client to start on MyServer, with Source= MyServer and Player= AppleTV4. This would keep all streaming on ethernet rather than WiFi.

MyServer: MyAppleTV4:
   (PMS <---> A Plex Client) <================>
                   ^ ethernet
                   |
MyLaptop: |
   Plexamp <~~~~~~+
               wifi

In other words, I thought Plexamp was a “remote control” for a Plex Client.

Is plexamp the tool for this job?

Plexamp might be able to connect to your ATV, because that is where the actual playback has to happen (since the speakers are connected to it.)

You should be able to direct the output of plexamp to your ATV.
But playback in this way won’t give you the IMHO most important advantages of Plexamp: loudness leveling and Sweet Fades.

So you could perhaps use the mobile Plex app instead, running on your phone or on a tablet.
see https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/features/casting-flinging-remote-control/

The mobile Plex app began by asking for my “Company id.” so I didn’t get much further.

However, I was finally able to run plexamp on the server, and set its player to AppleTV; and then control that plexamp remotely from plexamp on my laptop. (Y’all call that flinging.)

I don’t know quite how I got everything working, but now it’s making sense. (The player choices in the submenu were sometimes slow to populate so I may have not seen some earlier.)

Schematic:

MyServer: MyAppleTV4:
(PMS <---> Plexamp) <================> Plex player
                 ^ ethernet
                 |
MyLaptop: |
   Plexamp <~~~~+
             wifi
