When recording a whole season of a TV series, Plex misses some episodes

I have been using DVR for a while, and trying to get to the point where I can decommission my Windows Media Center PC and just rely on Plex 100%. However, the problem I keep running into is that when I set Plex to record a TV series, then I go in a few weeks later to look for something to watch, I always find that Plex has recorded only some or most episodes, but there are almost always some missing. This is frustrating because then I have to go buy those episodes on iTunes or Amazon to fill in the gaps when watching that series. I don’t find this same problem when I have Windows Media Center record a series. Has anyone else run into this? How do I troubleshoot this?

Would need to catch it when it actually happens not a couple weeks later. Logs only go back generally less than 24 hours depending on activity.

I think the stations in my area purposely don’t air all the episodes. I’m on the second go around with Maverick and still am missing an episode. 2BrokeGirls is missing an episode per season. The Magnificent Seven is missing an episode…I’ve even setup EyeTV to try to get the missing episodes and they don’t show up on it either.

Is it random or do your recording settings only say to record NEW and the series is airing both old and new and onl the new are being recorded? If so there is an option inthe recording setting to record both. Just thinking allowed. I too just got off WMCE byte my tongue and have had no issues yet but I am only on 1.9.4 and so far so good recording the major network programs.

@ChrisAWallace Some shows definitely skip episodes. I have seen the same thing with 2 Broke Girls and some others. What I have found is it appears that they are perhaps skipping some episodes that are holiday related. For instance some Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas episodes seem to be skipped on some shows. I have seen a few instances of Halloween episodes that were skipped are scheduled for airing next week. Hoping the same will hold true for some Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes.

@theeiman I have all of my recordings set to New and Repeat.

Thanks for all the comments so far, guys. This has happened on literally every series I have recorded, which is probably about 10 series over the last year. Plex will miss an episode here or there, or sometimes a few. I am busy and don’t get to watch TV very often, so it’s only a couple months later when I go to find something to watch, I see that xyz series has recorded episode 2, 3, 7, and 9 :(. In some cases, I had set it to record both new and repeat, so that isn’t the problem. And some of the series were brand new, so new vs repeat wouldn’t be an issue either. From what I’ve seen, the problem is not on the broadcast side, it’s something with my Plex setup… My best guesses are 1) the PC that acts as a server sometimes doesn’t keep Plex running for some reason (in which case maybe it’s time to move to a dedicated Plex box… ), or 2) The network-attached tuner is perhaps busy and thus Plex can’t access it. With either one, it would be REALLY useful if Plex software would notify me the next time I log on to the serve that an episode was missed, with a basic error info of some kind to give a hint on why…
