Synology NAS Version 1.13.6.176
Web client Version 3.81.1
Hello, I recently purchased a new Synology NAS and I’m trying to load my media on it. The funny thing is I have separated my tv shows according to the tutorials and I’m confident they’re correct, but when I go through the wizard in Plex and get to “add folders” my onboard “slave” drive (d:) in this case isn’t shown? Further no drive other than the Plex folder is available making it impossible to add media. There is a “movies” folder present and through file explorer I’m able to add movies but can’t do that the normal way through the Plex interface. I’ve rebooted several times with no change and I’ve pulled up network and sharing to see if anything was turned off? it wasn’t. But that doesn’t explain the local drive not being able to be seen? Can someone help me?
Sounds like your file system’s permissions are blocking you. Assure the plex account has R-W throughout.
Hello and thank you for getting back to me. How exactly do I make sure the Plex account has R-W? And what is R-W?
Ive gone through my account settings and can’t find any read write options?
I’ve read the article sent me thank you. And thank you for getting back to me. Unfortunately I have gone through all the settings and have given permission to my d drive and went into network sharing and made the network visible to any user. rebooted and still have the same issue? Then I went through file explorer and selected the d drive went through properties and allowed sharing? Further then I shut down restarted the machine and still when I add folders in plex it doesn’t see any drives? Very frustrating.
If you just gave permissions to the plex
user in the control panel, then try and restart PMS
I opened the control panel in windows 10 but do not see plex user? and I opened my account in plex via a browser (chrome) but do not see permissions as an option. Obviously I’m not looking in the right place or my ignorance is preventing me from following your instructions. I’m sorry can you please clearly explain where you are looking so that I have a chance in following your directions.
thank you in advance
Just to get this straight…
Where did you install the Plex Media Server? On the Synology within their DiskStation Manager (DSM) or on your Windows machine?
If the server is running on your Windows with the Synology attached as storage only, you need to make sure you have the Synology shares mapped as drives on your Windows. If they’re linked to a drive letter, they should also show up within Plex when you want to add a folder to your library.
If the server is running on your Synology… the settings proposed by dane22 refer to the DiskStation setting – you cannot configure those from within your Windows Control Center.
I don’t see the option under user to give permission?
Synology -> Control Panel -> Shared Folders -> EDIT the share containing media -> Permissions -> Check the R/W box for user plex.
thank you for the help, yes I went into Synology and did as instructed. I signed out of Plex then went back in I also rebooted after the changes to Synology.
this is what I get when I try to add tv shows? Further the Synology change I understand but the drive that has the media on it is local to this machine? Its my second drive (d:) locally on this machine that has the media on it that I can’t have Plex find?
Your media should be on the Synology NAS in one of its “Shared Folder”.
Your media shares will be found under the volume1 folder name. This is how Synology names things.
understood but why doesn’t plex allow me to see any drives at all?
It isn’t Plex. It’s Synology. This is how Linux works. It will not let you see anything unless you are given permission to.
I could have made Plex work the other way on Synology;
I could have it configured to ignore ALL restrictions.
If I did this, it would be no better than Windows where the slightest mistake could erase all your media.
thank you for your help. I found a video on youtube couple that with your help and I was able to figure it out. I’m using a Synology NAS with Xbox one the video plays but seems a little weird the video plays but seems just a little bit sluggish. I figure its something due to decoding but not sure. Should the decoding be done at the xbox or the NAS? And how do I find out?
On the PMS Server, which in your case is your NAS
