Where are season posters chosen?

So, I have a few series now where Plex has somehow managed to pick up special “Season” posters for a foreign language. When I edit the season poster, it shows a blank list of posters, not even the shows base poster image. So I cannot reset the poster to default, nor does it have a list of english-language posters.

The shows aren’t even french shows, but both of them somehow picked up french-language season posters.

Looks like it is from TheTVDB: Animal (2021) - Aired Order - Season 2 - TheTVDB.com

Edit the show, not the season, (pencil icon → Advanced) and choose Episode Ordering = The Movie Database (Aired). The refresh the metadata if it does not do so automatically.

Ran a test on my server. With Episode Ordering = TheTVDB (aired) I see the French language poster. When set to The Movie Database, I see an English language poster.

You can also add your own show/season posters if desired: Local Media Assets – TV Shows.

What I mean about it, is if my server is downloading the season posters, why does it not show up when I edit the season poster images? Individual episodes auto-generate posters and sometimes have selectable posters downloaded from TVDB. Show level has posters downloaded from TVDB, which Plex autopicks from.

But Season posters seems to be a gray area here where it downloads season posters (sometimes!), but does not include the downloaded poster (or the base show poster) in the selection menu. I would assume that if there is no poster picked for a season, it defaults to showing the show’s poster instead (which you see in my screenshot for season 1).

I’d like to avoid pick out and upload my own season poster. I don’t want to customize my library with custom uploaded posters too much, in case I have to rebuild my structure in the future in a catastrophic database loss.

Edit: Changing to TMDB downloaded a cheetah poster for both seasons of the show, and they remain as selectable when I revert the show back to TVDB (my default). This fixes that at LEAST the season image isn’t in french. I’ll see if I can copy this for the other show that I noticed a french season image.

Ah, and the french season poster is now visible and selectable in the menu in addition to the cheetah. It’s strange that it used a poster that wasn’t an option before.

Yeah, something “different” happens with season posters. The choice of TMDB or TVDB for episode ordering seems to influence which posters are chosen by default. And no idea why you don’t initially see all posters from both locations when editing the season, since PMS downloads them from a Plex server, not directly from the sites.

Re: using own posters, I use them for a few old series where no posters are available in TMDB/TVDB. However, I do not upload them to the database. I leave them in the show folder. That way in case of a catastrophic server failure the I just have to re-scan the library to pick them up. I don’t have to re-upload them to PMS.

Ah. I am very reluctant to place anything in with my media other than… well… media. It’s kind of a leftover from waaaaaay back when I was pretty mental about file organization. I don’t have as much of an aversion to doing so now (for shows. Movies I still don’t want them). Might do that. Though it means that I’d have a season poster image for just this season in this show, and one for another show. Seems arbitrary. If I’m gonna do that, might as well do that for ALL other shows/season posters, and at that point I get depressed at the thought of all the work and give up.

I’m happy with the way Plex does things, I just would like to get this tiny issue fixed, where Plex seems to download a season poster here and there, but don’t actually show me in the UI that it did so. (Thus my forum post asking where these posters came from, if my server “claims” to not have them)
