Which version is which?

Server Version#:Latest
Player Version#:Latest

I am using Plex version 1.18.7.2457 on my OS 10.15.3 MBp. I am assuming that is the latest because it says I am up to date.

For my iPhone IOS I am on version 6.8 of the app. Which I keep an eye out for updates for that.

The reason for my confusion is today on MacUpdate I saw that there is a version 2.52.1.1054 for the media player.

Is the app I have called a “media player” or is that update for something completely different?

Now that I think about it, is that new update for streaming devices like Apple tv, Roku etc.?

Maybe a list of current software/apps somewhere and what they are for would be helpful.

Thanks.

Jonathan

To remove the confusion, spend some time becoming familiar with these areas of Plex world.

Set up your Plex Notifications

Become familiar with your options in forum discussions

Another is to look at Authorised devices in Plex Media server settings.

Media player is a different app all together, support page below.

https://www.plex.tv/en-ca/blog/introducing-the-plex-media-player/

For a list of apps:

https://www.plex.tv/your-media/

plex media player, and plex for mac/windows are 2 separate apps.

PMP is older htpc-centric app

plex for mac/windows is a newer app, but with somewhat less advanced functionality (ie not htpc-centric)

for whatever reasons, pmp is only listed in the announcement pages @

Thanks guys.

After reading all that still a bit confused. Old and crazy I guess.

So, Plex Media Server on my Mac is the main “Access” point for my stuff. I have only been using Plex fro photo viewing and sharing. Works fine.

Plex App on IPhone for just that. Use on iPhone. Works fine.

Do I even need Plex Media Player? I don’t have it now. What am I missing?

Probably not, it’s another way to use your collection to a monitor /TV instead of a Box like Roku, Apple Tv or even a TV app.

Do you have the server connected to the TV? This is most common way to consume your Media.

plex has 2 main parts

plex SERVER - this part indexes your content and lets you play/view it from many different devices

plex CLIENTS - these are the many different players that can view the content served by the server.

clients come for all kinds of devices, like web ( Plex Web ), mobile devices/phones/tablets, mac’s, pc’s, htpc’s, streaming devices, tv’s, etc.

Thanks again!!!

Soon I’ll be adding an Apple TV to view photos etc. If I go to App store on Apple Tv it will prompt to install the Plex appropriate “client” and all will be good. Correct?

It won’t prompt you but you simply search for plex and the store will list the app.
