Why are some movies using localized titles even though I've specifically asked it not to do it?

I have localized titles un-marked in the agent and I don’t use TMDB as an agent.

my library language is in Swedish, and the agent is set to Swedish but localized titles is off, yet some titles gets localized titles. it’s very few that gets Swedish titles and even some titles that I know for a fact have Swedish don’t have localized titles.

examples:

“The good shepard” gets translated to “den innersta kretsen”
“Brother bear 2” gets translated into “Björnbröder 2” (ironically the first brother bear movie have the correct name)

how do I trouble shoot this?

I’ve tried changing language in the agent and done the plex-dance, but it didn’t work. I don’t want to change the library language.

A swedish movie might get a swedish title.

Your files could have embedded ‘title’ tags. By default, Plex gives these priority over titles from the online agents.
Do this to change that:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase

Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

yeah, I’m perfectly fine with this. but none of the movies I mentioned are originally Swedish.

This could be the case, But I’m not willing to give online metadata grabbers priority ove local media assets. But I gave it a shot to confirm it. but it didn’t fix the title.

I have a ubuntu machine and I’m looking at properties of “Brother Bear 2”. Under the video/audio tab the title information have “Unknown” assigned to it.

If I run it through mediainfo it says that the video stream title is called “Brother Bear 2”

So I don’t think the title gets pulled from my files. I even tried switching the metadata agent to English and place it on top of everything. Nothing. not even the genres becomes English. Hell, even the poster is localized.

I don’t know how this looking on Ubuntu. No idea what you are seeing.

The title of the video stream is of no relevance. Only the title of the whole file is. (Yes, there is really a difference and MKV files support titles for every single stream and the overall container.)

May I see the Plex XML info of that movie please?

Here is the XML.

the file is called “Brother Bear 2 (2006) - [Bluray-1080p].mkv” in a folder called “Brother Bear 2 (2006)”

I see this one is matched with the ‘TheMovieDatabase’ agent.
Which means all those detailed settings in the properties of the ‘Plex Movie’ agent don’t apply.

And the TMDB agent doesn’t let you set the language of the title.

Use the ‘Fix Match’ procedure to match this movie with the ‘Plex Movie’ agent instead.

aright, I did that. still localized title.

Could you do the following:
(This is merely to conduct an experiment. Enable server debug logging, so we have logs to add to the error report)

Switch your library to use the ‘Plex Movie’ agent.
(This will not affect the existing movies in this library)
Perform the full Plex Dance with the movie.

Wait several minutes after re-adding the movie.
Grab log files.

done, I waited 2 minutes. I ran scanning, emptying, optimizing and cleaning twice. put it back in and it’s still have a Swedish title.

The logs show that the metadata server with the IMDb data on it has no data for this movie.

So the agent falls back to using the TMDB agent, which of course doesn’t provide the original title.

This movie is a direct-to-video release, which is not covered by the Plex Movie agent.
That might be the ultimate reason.

I suspected that it was source issue and not a program glitch. but it’s good to have it confirmed and to know that nothing is amiss.

It dosen’t effect a whole lot of movies, so renaming them manually when these outliers are spotted isn’t a big deal.
