Particularly for some of the budget brands. I recently acquired a Digihome* 4k TV purchased from CoOp electrical. It is a great TV which already has Netflix and iPlayer etc. It does have the ability to play DNLA content from my plex server using a generic interface but this is nothing the like having a full app with all the plex features such as poster images. (* Digihome is a marketing name for Vestel a Turkish Manufacturer)
Probably because the demand is so low. To produce an app for a given TV the developer must have access to one and there are just too many for Plex to bother with.
As an aside I believe that “smart” TVs are a dumb idea. The intelligence in a setup belongs external to the display device. Most display devices remain usable for many years while the “smarts” go out of date in only a few.
However my next TV may be a “smart” one because supply and demand have made “smart” TVs often cheaper than dumb ones. Just like a “display” without a tuner costs more that an equivalent TV with one. I just will not need or want or use the “smart” features just like I don’t use the tuner in my current TVs.
I understand what you mean but many of us are trying to get away from having multiple boxes and multiple handsets. I do have a youview box (Humax) that I could use but Plex have not produced an app for that either
You could use the old ‘work around’ - install an HDMI cable from the server to the TV and drag a Plex Media Player over there… control it with a cheap 10 foot user-interface remote system ($10 on Amazon) - or the Plex app in an android phone.
IF Plex developed an app for your box - it would probably suck badly and you’d be better off dragging a PMP to the TV anyway. I have a FireTV Plex can’t create an app for (that’s worth a dam), so that HDMI cable is getting a regular work out.
Until Plex destroys PMP (soon), it’s a viable alternative to the crap Plex has been developing in their App Wing(s).
cables are out too far from my server and the TV is wireless - however you just reminded me about the firestick app - I will give that a go. Actually I have always quite liked the app interfaces, what is it you dislike about them?
