Why Did My Plex Media Server Get so Large?

Server Version#:1.31.0
Player Version#:Fire TV 9.15.0.38159

Why did the Plex Media Server on my QNAP server explode in size over the past few days? It has used up all of the space on the volume I originally installed it on so I’m in the process move migrating it over to another volume, the same volume I store all of my videos on.

I install all of my apps to this volume because it is M.2 SSD which gives me great performance.

Is this related to the ‘Program Guide Data for Live TV’ problem? If not, how do I get the Plex Media Server app down to a reasonable size?

I removed Plex from my QNAP server and reinstalled it (pain in the but adding libraries and marking most watched). After Plax was reinstalled, the app only used about 600MB, but as it adds more meta data the app file keeps growing, it’s at 27.72 GB and climbing.

What is using all of the space, and can I move it off of the volume where QNAP installs apps?hat is

If you enabled video preview thumbnails it can take a lot of disk space

Yes, see: How to migrate App center Apps to another NAS volume | QNAP

I’ve gone into the Advanced folder setup and unchecked ‘Enable video preview thumbnails’, and clicked on ‘Delete Preview Thumbnails’, but as Plex keeps detecting intros & credits, the size of the Plex Media Server keeps growing. Currently at 91.75 GB and climbing.

Yesterday when Plex Media Server used up all of the space in the volume where all of the QNAP applications are located, I tried migrating Plex to one of the volumes that had plenty of space (volume where I keep the shared folder with all of my Plex media on). When the migration completed, Plex Media Server still showed as being on the original volume, and was still over 660 GB in size.

Is it the Plex Media Server Data Directory that is growing like crazy of something else. If it is, how do I move to to another volume with a ton of space? Sorry, I’m not a QNAP server expert so any guidance would be appreciated.

I’ve gone into the Advanced folder setup and unchecked ‘Enable video preview thumbnails’, and clicked on ‘Delete Preview Thumbnails’, but as Plex keeps detecting intros & credits, the size of the Plex Media Server keeps growing. Currently at 103.13 GB and climbing.

All of the apps on my QNAP server run on Vol1 (M.2 SSD), which included Plex Media Server. All of my media folders & files are in a Plex Media shared folder I created on Vol2.

As Plex scans the libraries, the size kept growing so I stopped Plex, and after a few minutes I started it again. The ‘activity’ stopped spinning and the Plex Media Server stopped growing, it’s now at 146.81 GB.

Where is all of the meta data stored in Plex, and if it is the file that keeps growing, can it be moved to a a shared folder on a different volume?

I’ve just noticed something that might explain this…

I do not know what OS your workstation is running, but since most people use Windows, and if so, can you please install WinSCP, and if not, tell me the OS of your workstation

I’m running QTS 5.0.1.2277 on a QNAP TS-1277 with a AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (8 cores & 16 threads), with 32 GB of memory. No Windows

And your desktop is running what?

Windows 11 on the desktop/laptop.

So you are on Windows, did you then install WinSCP?

Yes, I’ve installed WinSCP on on of my laptops and was able to log into my server.

Cool

When WinSCP then make sure that you have enabled to show hidden files and folders (Ctrl-Alt-H). Also make sure, that you connect using SFTP!

Then you need to navigate to the PMS Library directory, which most likely is located here:
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library

In that directory, you’ll find a directory named tmp
Right Click on that in WinSCP and select properties
Then click on the Calculate button

What’s the size of that directory?

It won’t connect to my server with a SFTP connection, only a FTP connection

Okay, turned on SFTP and fired up WinSCP, when logging in I get this

I was able to login using the admin account and I started the calculating step. It’s been running for about 5 minutes and I’ll let it run while I do some running around.

Okay, I just got back and the calculate completed. Looks like it’s using 129 GB. The volume I want to move it to has a capacity of 45 TB, and only about 22 TB’s is being used.

In QTS AppCenter, stop PMS

Then in WinSCP, rename the tmp directory to tmp-old

Then start PMS again in the AppCenter

Then delete the tmp-old directory with WinSCP

And FYI, this is not how it’s supposed to work, so have alerted the developers

Edit: And above procedure can be repeated at regular intervals, until we have a fix

After PMS is restarted, is it supposed to create a new tmp folder? Also, there is no need to move this to a different volume?

Heh…I forgot…

Stop PMS again, and then create the tmp fld, and start it again

And no need to move PMS to another volume for now.

We are investigating this
