I have been using the free version of Plex for about a month and am really impressed but have a few niggles to solve. My setup is like this:
My media is on a NAS. The Plex server is on a Windows PC and my primary viewing device is a Panasonic smart TV. I also view content on a W10 laptop.
My media files are organised into top level directories: Movies, Music, TV . The Movies are then in alphabetical sub directories, as is music. TV sub directories are by TV program e.g. Fargo - Season 01, Season 02, etc.
I am starting to realise that certain media files are not displayed within the Plex client.
As an example, I have a file within the movie\S folder named “Stevie Wonder 2009 Live At Last 720p.mp4” This file will not appear on any Plex client. The MP4 extension is not the problem as other MP4 files work fine.
Can anyone help me with this?
Also is a list of media file types that Plex does not like?
Embedded metadata in mp4/m4v files can cause a “mismatch” with the item appearing in a place you’d never expect.
Make sure that your files have either no content in their embedded ‘Title’ metatags or configure Plex to disregard them, like so:
Go to
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
After doing that, go to point 4)

A “movie” library which uses the “Plex Movie” metadata agent, will usually not be able to match live concerts, documentations or ‘tv movies’.
I recommend you to separate all non-movie items out and create a separate library for them, which uses the ‘TheMoviedatabase’ agent instead. Because there you can find live concerts and docus and direct-to-video releases. https://www.themoviedb.org/

After renaming video files or sorting them into subfolders, in order to get them recognized better by Plex, you might have to clear out a mismatch from Plex’s database by performing the Plex Dance
