Why does Plex sometimes transcode my DVR recordings?

I recently installed the Plex DVR, but even when I explicitly select the original quality, Plex will sometimes still transcode the h264 video to h264. If I then explicitly go back into the video, select original quality again, and re-try, it stops the transcoding and streams it like I expect. Why is this happening? It feels like a bug.

I’ve also noticed that sometimes Plex will select a lower quality setting to display than what was recorded. It forces me to go into the settings and manually select the original quality.

My player is a Roku Ultra, and I’m using the latest 1.11 version of plexmediaserver on Linux.
Also, no matter what I do plex insists on transcoding the AC3 audio to AAC. My Roku Ultra supports AC3 audio natively, so this shouldn’t be necessary.

do you have auto quality set in whatever you are playing back stuff in?

I looked in the Plex app settings on the Roku, and I didn’t have Original quality selected. That was the problem with the video transcoding. Switching to original quality solved the problem. Thanks.

Now what about the AC3 transcoding? It always transcodes the AC3 to AAC despite me having a Roku Ultra which is supposed to handle AC3.
