I don’t think there’s going to be a fix for this anytime soon. @Anijake rightly pointed out, these guys are sitting with their heads in the sand. Anyway, good time to try Emby. Glad I didn’t get the lifetime pass!
Just following up on this, does anyone experience this while not using a VPN? There have been some mentions of VPN, so we’re trying to narrow down the cause.
I get this issue and I never use a VPN. However, I’m on iOS just so you’re aware.
Facing issue on both iPad and iPhone. Never used vpn in life.
When you are seeing “Offline” in the app are you able to load plex.tv in Safari on your phone?
Yes, plex.tv in Safari does work. I can also switch to my own user account in the Plex app and everything works normally. When I switch back to one of my managed users, the Music library says my server is offline.
Thanks! I was able to reproduce your issue and am trying to track down the problem. Just to be sure, if you go to plex web and switch to that user with restrictions are you able to see content in the music library there?
That is correct. If I switch to the managed user in Plex web on the iPhone or on a PC (neither are on my home network) the content shows up properly in the Music library.
We identified a server issue causing the music library issue, unfortunately there is no workaround besides removing the restrictions right now, I’ll post in here when a build with a fix is available. Sorry it took so long for someone to look into this.
For the people having the offline banner issue, can one of you verify if you can reach plex.tv in Safari when you have the offline banner showing in app?
I am sorry Plex folks but this new UI is horrible and riddled with bugs. Its not usable on IOS when I just wan to browse local content I have to change something in settings…then when in this mode I get a UI that makes me feel like its an error to browse offline content…even the icons are odd. Your PO and UX folks needed to better understand the use cases before such a radical redesign…its the reason I cancelled my subscription.
Thank you for taking the time to look at this. I look forward to seeing a fix come through in a future update!
The offline banner issue hasn’t happened all day yesterday. The moment it happens again, I’ll try and reach plex.tv through safari and update here. Thank you for looking into this issue.
So the app shows media offline. I’m able to access Plex.tv. So there’s definitely something wrong with the app.
Yes. I am the use case of iOS12 having the issue only on 4G when on a VPN. I am still able to access via safari Plex.tv and browse libraries with no issue while receiving the offline banner in the app.
As previously mentioned, on WiFi with VPN = app works, WiFi without VPN = app works, 4G with VPN Issue as described above, 4G without VPN = app works
Also as mentioned the app works if I get to the libraries and start playing say a TV series before I get the offline banner. It will still show offline but I’m able to keep playing the media and skip forward and back to different episodes, so it’s definatrly an interface only issue.
Control purposes - iOS 11 iPhone 7 with the same VPN profile, same login no issues with or without VPN on 4G or WiFi.
Logs of all this behaviour in my previous post.
If I can provide any other details that can help get this resolved please let me know.
So after a long trial run, I was able to isolate the issue at my end. I have apps on both my iphone and ipad. Server is run on a macbook pro. (All the three devices run the latest respective OS versions)
Here’s what happened earier - I am watching a 1080p movie on my ipad. Suddenly in the middle of playback, server shows offline. I immediately check the app on my iphone - that is working. I restart the wifi on my ipad and the app starts working fine again. 10 minutes later, the same issue repeats itself. And this time, I can’t reach plex.tv on safari on my ipad. But its reachable from iphone and the iphone app works fine. So I initially doubt theres something wrong with my ipad. But I stream movies in HD and ultra HD on my ipad on apps ‘MUBI’ and ‘amazon prime’. There it all works well. Again I try streaming 1080p movie on plex and the app and the wifi hangs.
So I go to settings and reduce the size of home streaming quality from ‘recommended’ to 720p 2MBps. After that, the ipad app seems to be working perfectly. I streamed two movies on the ipad app and no issue occured. So I kind of finally narrow it down to an issue with the ipad version of the app while streaming 1080p movies with subtitles without reducing quality. Hope this helps.
Try deleting High School Musical.
Any updates on this? This is about to become a big issue for Plex with VPN’s for anyone with iOS 12s release and we’re only a few weeks out from release.
Edit: Lastest iOS update downloaded same issue
Double Edit: Latest PMS same issue
Oof. Harsh.
This happened to me yesterday, but since I had changed my networking hardware I investigated a bit and it would seem it might have more to do with WiFi access on the iOS app.
My setup is a Hackintosh running Plex Server via Ethernet cable, older Samsung SmartTV with an old Plex app (also running on Ethernet), iPad and iPhone devices and a MPBs - all Apple devices running on WiFi.
I can access Plex on TV, runs and plays all fine, on MPB I can access via both web interface and the app just as well. But on both iPad and iPhone I get the Offline label, cannot browse any section and cannot play a thing.
